This strategic move, announced on September 17, 2025, aims to foster smarter, more secure, and more transparent shopping experiences powered by AI and intelligent agents.
The cornerstone of this initiative is the ‘Agent Toolkit,’ now available on Mastercard Developers. This toolkit empowers AI assistants and agentic tools to seamlessly access and interpret Mastercard’s API documentation. It achieves this through structured, machine-readable content delivered via the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server. This innovative approach facilitates integration with leading AI platforms such as Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, making Mastercard APIs more discoverable and easier to incorporate into agentic workflows. The MCP’s availability further complements the existing Agent2Agent protocol, enhancing interoperability within the AI ecosystem.
In conjunction with the toolkit, Mastercard is rolling out the ‘Mastercard Agent Pay’ program. By the upcoming holiday season, all U.S. Mastercard cardholders are expected to be enabled for this program, with a global expansion planned shortly thereafter. Early adopters, including Citi and U.S. Bank Mastercard cardholders, will be among the first to experience AI-enabled shopping through agentic commerce providers and enablers like PayOS, Firmly.AI, and Basis Theory.
Mastercard is actively collaborating with prominent AI and commerce leaders, including Stripe, Google, and Ant International’s Antom, to ensure secure agentic transactions are both accessible and scalable for digital merchants and platforms worldwide. The company is leveraging its extensive expertise in shaping global digital payment standards, such as contactless and tokenization, to define how payments should function within agentic environments. This includes working with the FIDO Alliance and its Payments Working Group to develop a verifiable credential standard for payments, which will confirm crucial transaction details like amount, merchant, and product.
Craig Vosburg, Chief Services Officer at Mastercard, emphasized the transformative nature of this shift, stating, “AI-powered payments aren’t just a trend — they’re a transformation. Payments must be native to the agentic experience. We’re building the infrastructure for a new generation of intelligent transactions, where consumers and developers can empower AI agents to act on their behalf with trust, transparency and precision.” Jorn Lambert, Chief Product Officer, further underscored this commitment, adding, “We’re committed to enabling a trusted environment for AI-powered payments to scale globally.”
Beyond the Agent Toolkit, Mastercard is also introducing ‘Insight Tokens,’ which provide AI agents with permissioned access to real-time payment data. This feature is designed to enable personalized customer interactions and enhance decision-making capabilities for merchants, offering competitive advantages through tailored services based on analytics. This real-time data sharing capability allows merchants to respond instantly to customer behavior patterns, potentially boosting conversion rates and customer satisfaction.
