Global Fintech Festival 2025: AI, UPI, and Digital Assets Chart India’s Financial Future

TLDR: The 6th Global Fintech Festival (GFF) 2025 in Mumbai concluded, highlighting Artificial Intelligence (AI), Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and digital assets as pivotal forces shaping India’s financial landscape. The event emphasized AI’s practical integration across banking and payments, UPI’s global expansion and innovative applications like biometric authentication and IoT payments, and the ongoing regulatory debate surrounding private digital assets versus public infrastructure. Key figures stressed the importance of indigenous AI development and leveraging technology for financial inclusion and efficiency.

Mumbai, India – The 6th Global Fintech Festival (GFF) 2025, held recently in Mumbai, solidified its reputation as the world’s largest gathering of fintech and financial professionals. Operating under the theme ‘Empowering Finance for a Better World Powered by AI: Augmented Intelligence, Innovation, and Inclusion,’ the three-day event served as a crucial platform for outlining India’s ambitious blueprint for scaling digital public goods and defining the future role of private digital assets.

The AI Imperative: From Pilot to Production

Artificial Intelligence emerged as a dominant theme, moving beyond theoretical discussions to focus on practical integration across banking, payments, and credit. The festival underscored a strategic shift towards leveraging sophisticated AI models, including Small Language Models (SLMs), to enhance core utility in the financial sector.

Notable AI-driven innovations showcased included the launch of the AI-based UPI Help, an intelligent customer service system designed to provide contextual guidance and manage complaints seamlessly. Infrastructure modernization was also a key focus, with the introduction of the Razorpay Banking Stack, a comprehensive payments infrastructure built for banks, highlighting the push to accelerate speed and intelligence through modern technology.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder of Paytm, emphasized India’s need to build indigenous AI use cases, stating, ‘In 2005, I worked in the telecom operator sector. In 2015, I worked in payments. In 2025, we will work in AI. Because, in this country, if someone is not working in AI, then that person is not working for the future.’ He also announced Paytm’s plans to establish a separate entity for AI innovations, including an SLM tailored for merchants and businesses.

UPI’s Unrivaled Dominance and Global Reach

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) continued to be a central point of discussion, celebrated for its spectacular success and its role as an undisputed platform for inclusion. India’s daily UPI payments now account for half of the world’s real-time payment value, reflecting a consumer ecosystem deeply integrated with fintech.

Innovations around UPI included a major initiative by the RBI for biometric authentication, enabling UPI payments via fingerprint or face recognition, thereby removing the need for a PIN and simplifying transactions for millions. UPI’s expansion into Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices was also demonstrated, allowing payments for services like fuel or EV charging directly from connected cars, smart glasses, or smart TVs. Furthermore, PayPal’s global UPI integration with NPCI was highlighted, signaling a massive global reach for the platform.

Digital Assets: A Regulatory Battleground

The future of digital assets, particularly private digital assets, remains a complex and contentious issue. The festival underscored a ‘zero-sum regulatory battle’ between the power of public infrastructure and the promise of decentralized finance. In contrast to other Asian markets, India’s priority is to build trust and inclusion through regulated Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), often sidelining the private digital asset market.

This regulatory ambiguity has created a ‘chilling effect’ on stablecoin use cases and raised concerns about a potential ‘brain-drain’ among investors and innovators. Nandan Nilekani announced that the DPI platform ‘Finternet’ is slated to go live in 2026, with tokenization emerging as a new theme set to reshape assets, much like UPI transformed money.

Other Key Highlights

The GFF 2025 also saw significant diplomatic and business developments. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit marked a deeper India-UK fintech partnership, with an open invitation for Indian innovators and investors to expand in the UK. Revolut, a UK fintech firm, announced a substantial $670 million investment in India over the next five years.

Tanya Naik, Head of Online and Omni Channel Business at Pine Labs, emphasized that AI and biometric authentication are setting the stage for the next phase of digital commerce in India, making payments faster, safer, and more efficient. She noted that AI has transformed operations, enabling better customer experience at scale and optimum costs.

Fraud prevention in fintech was another critical area, with global giants like Visa and Indian startups like Bureau showcasing AI and machine learning solutions to predict and combat digital fraud.
