Hong Kong, August 8, 2025 – The ‘Global AI Challenge for Building E&M Facilities 2025 – Building and Construction AI Conference and Awards Ceremony’ successfully concluded today at the Hong Kong Science Park. Jointly organized by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) and the Guangdong Provincial Association for Science and Technology, the event served as a pivotal platform to advance the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies within the building electrical and mechanical (E&M) industry.
The challenge, which ran from June to August 2025, garnered significant international interest, drawing participation from over 200 teams representing 26 countries and regions. It comprised two distinct sub-themed competitions: ‘Build Your AI Model’ and ‘Innovative Proposal for Construction and Engineering’. These competitions provided a dynamic environment for researchers, students, AI specialists, start-ups, and industry professionals to exchange innovative ideas and demonstrate practical applications of AI in driving the evolution of the building E&M sector.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Ms. Bernadette Linn, the Secretary for Development, underscored Hong Kong’s strategic position as an ideal testing ground for advanced innovative solutions. She highlighted the city’s world-class infrastructure, robust intellectual property protections, and unparalleled connectivity with other cities in the Greater Bay Area and globally. Ms. Linn also detailed the Development Bureau’s (DEVB) proactive efforts in digitalizing the construction sector and integrating AI technologies into public works projects. She noted that the DEVB’s self-developed Integrated Capital Works Platform leverages AI-driven cross-dimensional analyses to forecast project performance, including cost control and work progress, thereby optimizing efficiency and decision-making in public works management. The bureau plans to roll out a policy later this year, building on successful pilot trials.
Mr. Poon Kwok-ying, Director of Electrical and Mechanical Services, commended the participants for their contributions to AI transformation. He emphasized the remarkable advancements of AI in fields such as energy, construction, and innovation and technology, which have created numerous synergistic opportunities. Mr. Poon stated that the Global AI Challenge has not only accelerated AI adoption in Hong Kong but also established a strong foundation for the younger generation to master AI applications.
