The landscape of Canadian higher education is grappling with the pervasive rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools among its student population. Recent research indicates a significant increase in the adoption of these technologies, prompting a re-evaluation of academic practices, learning outcomes, and ethical considerations.
According to KPMG in Canada research, nearly six in ten (59%) Canadian students now utilize generative AI for their schoolwork, a notable increase from 52% just a year prior. While 75% of students acknowledge that these tools have enhanced the quality of their assignments and aided in exam preparation, a striking two-thirds (67%) confess to not learning or retaining as much knowledge. This paradox highlights a core dilemma: improved output at the potential cost of deeper understanding.
Academic integrity is another pressing concern. A staggering 82% of students admit to presenting generative AI-produced content as their original work, with most not disclosing their use of these tools to educators. Furthermore, 70% are turning to AI for help instead of consulting their instructors. C.J. James, Partner and National Education Practice Leader at KPMG in Canada, expressed concern, stating, “Educators should consider what the ramifications will be for this generation who, while adept at using technology, might not be developing the critical-thinking skills that they need to lead successful lives and careers.”
Students are primarily leveraging generative AI for tasks such as generating ideas (46%), conducting research (41%), and editing and reviewing assignments (38%). Despite the perceived benefits, 65% of students using generative AI feel they are cheating, and 63% worry about being caught by their educational institutions. James emphasizes the need to foster a positive connection with AI usage, noting that a negative perception is detrimental for both institutions and the future workforce.
Canadian post-secondary institutions find themselves at a crossroads. While some universities, like McGill, University of Toronto, and York University, are integrating AI tools to enhance learning, concerns persist regarding bias in AI models, ethical implications, privacy issues, and the technology’s environmental impact. A survey by Studiosity in late 2024 revealed that 78% of Canadian students used AI for studying or schoolwork.
The fragmented response across the country is also a significant challenge. Currently, only about half of Canadian universities have formal policies on generative AI, often leaving decisions to individual instructors. This inconsistency leads to confusion and potential inequities. Experts argue that Canada needs a national strategy for generative AI in higher education, encompassing both regulatory frameworks and widespread AI literacy.
