TLDR: A recent report by EY-Parthenon and FICCI reveals that over half of India’s Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have adopted AI-related policies, with a significant number utilizing generative AI for learning materials, tutoring, and automated grading, marking a transformative shift in the education landscape.
New Delhi – A groundbreaking report, “Future-Ready Campuses: Unlocking the Power of AI in Higher Education,” released by EY-Parthenon in collaboration with FICCI, highlights the rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within India’s higher education sector. The report, based on a survey of 30 leading HEIs across the nation, indicates that over 56% of Indian higher education institutions have already implemented AI-related policies. Furthermore, a substantial 60% of these institutions permit students to use AI tools, including generative AI applications for tutoring.
The study reveals that approximately 60% of HEIs have recognized AI as a strategic priority, allocating dedicated resources to its development and integration. Generative AI is being widely adopted, with 53% of HEIs utilizing it for developing learning materials. AI-powered tutoring systems and chatbots are deployed by 40% of institutions, while 39% have introduced adaptive learning platforms. Additionally, 38% of HEIs are leveraging AI for automated grading, demonstrating AI’s profound impact on curriculum design, assessment models, and classroom engagement strategies.
Dr. Avantika Tomar, Partner and Education Sector Leader at EY-Parthenon India, emphasized the need to move beyond experimentation to scale AI integration. She stated, “To unlock the full potential of AI, India must move beyond experimentation to scale—by integrating AI tools across teaching and campus operations, embedding AI literacy across subjects, investing in robust digital infrastructure, and strengthening faculty capacity and governance frameworks. These steps will help position India’s higher education system at the forefront of AI-enabled knowledge and innovation worldwide.”
The report stresses the importance of establishing clear classroom policies, thoughtful curriculum design, and updated institutional governance frameworks to support increased student interaction with AI. It also points out that progress in critical enablers, such as technology capabilities and faculty readiness for AI integration, remains uneven. Without focused attention on these foundational areas, there is a risk of fragmented adoption and unregulated use, potentially undermining learning outcomes and academic integrity.
