General Motors (GM) made a landmark announcement at its recent ‘GM Forward’ media event in New York, detailing its ambitious roadmap for the future of automotive technology. The company unveiled two pivotal innovations: an ‘eyes-off’ autonomous driving system and the integration of Google’s Gemini conversational artificial intelligence into its vehicle lineup. These developments underscore GM’s commitment to transforming cars into intelligent assistants and advancing personal autonomy.
The ‘eyes-off’ driving system represents a significant leap towards automated driving. This Level 3 autonomous feature, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), will allow drivers to completely remove their eyes from the road under specific conditions. It is slated to debut in 2028, first appearing in the Cadillac Escalade IQ electric SUV. The system leverages a sophisticated array of advanced sensors, including LiDAR, radar, and cameras, building upon GM’s existing Super Cruise hands-free software. GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra noted that this feature is expected to roll out ‘much faster than [regular] Super Cruise.’ Initially, the system will be limited to mapped highways, covering an impressive 600,000 miles across North America. While human intervention will still be required for certain maneuvers like off-ramps, the system is designed to handle emergencies and sudden incidents, with plans for eventual expansion into urban environments. The company highlighted its robust safety record, citing 700 million miles driven with Super Cruise without a single reported crash attributed to the system, further bolstered by over five million fully driverless miles from its subsidiary, Cruise.
Complementing the autonomous driving capabilities, GM will integrate Google Gemini, one of the world’s leading conversational AI platforms, into its vehicles starting in 2026. This conversational AI aims to enable more natural interactions between drivers and their cars, allowing occupants to speak to the vehicle ‘as naturally as you would to a fellow passenger.’ The system will facilitate a range of voice-activated functions, such as sending texts, planning detours, checking vehicle status, asking questions about routing, and receiving assistance with car features. Examples include explaining one-pedal driving, proactively spotting maintenance issues, or finding optimal dinner locations en route. Looking ahead, GM intends to transition from Google Gemini to its own custom-built AI platform. This in-house AI will be fine-tuned with the vehicle’s intelligence and the driver’s personal preferences, all seamlessly connected through OnStar.
