Gender Disparity in AI Adoption: Women Lag 25% Behind Men in Workplace Usage, Harvard Study Reveals

A groundbreaking study published by Harvard Business School has brought to light a significant gender gap in the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools within the workplace. The research, which synthesized data from 18 studies encompassing over 140,000 individuals globally, reveals that women are using AI at a rate 25% lower than their male counterparts. This finding raises concerns about potential professional consequences and the exacerbation of existing pay inequity.

Technology educator Avery Swartz, in an interview with CTV News, attributed this disparity primarily to a ‘confidence gap’ and a heightened sensitivity to potential losses among women. Swartz explained that women are statistically more likely to be penalized or punished for taking risks in the workplace. She noted a societal perception where a man using emerging technology is lauded as ‘innovative,’ while a woman doing the same might be seen as ‘cheating.’ This perception, coupled with fewer opportunities for women to receive proper AI education, contributes to their hesitation in adopting these tools.

The implications of this gender gap are far-reaching. If women continue to lag in AI adoption, it could hinder their career advancement and widen the gender pay gap. Recent UN research further underscores this risk, indicating that women, who are often overrepresented in entry-level and administrative roles, face a three times higher risk of job displacement by AI systems. Swartz emphasized that AI will eventually impact every job sector, and roles predominantly held by women, such as clerical administration, communications, healthcare, and caregiving, are among the first to be affected.

Beyond individual career trajectories, the underrepresentation of women in AI usage also poses a risk to the development of future AI technologies. It can lead to systems being trained on data that inadequately samples women’s preferences and needs, thereby widening existing gender disparities in technology adoption and economic opportunity. There are also concerns that AI hiring systems may already be advising women and minorities to negotiate for lower pay deals compared to their white male counterparts.
