Former Apple CEO John Sculley Declares OpenAI as Apple’s First True Competitor in Decades, Urges Shift to ‘Agentic Era’

TLDR: Former Apple CEO John Sculley has identified OpenAI as Apple’s most significant competitor in decades, asserting that artificial intelligence is not Apple’s core strength. Speaking at the Zeta Live conference, Sculley emphasized the industry’s transition from an ‘apps era’ to an ‘agentic era,’ where smart AI agents will largely replace the need for numerous individual applications and drive a shift towards subscription-based models. He highlighted Apple’s perceived lag in AI innovation compared to rivals and the strategic importance of former Apple designer Jony Ive’s collaboration with OpenAI.

New York, NY – In a significant declaration that has sent ripples through the tech industry, former Apple CEO John Sculley stated at the recent Zeta Live conference that OpenAI represents ‘the first real competitor’ Apple has faced ‘in many decades.’ Sculley, who led Apple from 1983 to 1993, underscored his belief that artificial intelligence has not been a particular strength for the Cupertino-based tech giant, urging the company to adapt to a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

According to Sculley, the tech world is transitioning from an ‘apps era’ to an ‘agentic era,’ a paradigm shift where intelligent AI agents will perform complex tasks and manage workflows, diminishing the reliance on a multitude of individual applications. ‘In the agentic era, we don’t need a lot of apps; it can all be done with smart agents,’ Sculley remarked. He further elaborated that this shift would also push technology companies towards subscription-based models, where users pay for ongoing service rather than one-time product purchases. ‘When we had apps at the center of everything, it was selling tools, selling products,’ Sculley added. ‘When you think of subscription, it’s about people paying for something as long as they need it.’

Sculley pointed to Apple’s perceived lag in AI advancements, noting that the company has not kept pace with competitors like OpenAI, Google, Amazon, and Meta in terms of consistent product updates and innovation centered around AI. He cited the delayed AI overhaul of the Siri voice assistant as a key indicator of this competitive gap. Reports suggest Apple has been relying on OpenAI’s ChatGPT for more complex Siri queries and is reportedly considering Google to power future Siri updates.

A notable development highlighted by Sculley is the collaboration between former Apple design chief Jony Ive and OpenAI. Ive, renowned for designing iconic Apple products such as the iMac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad, has partnered with OpenAI to develop next-generation AI-based hardware devices, with OpenAI having acquired his startup, io, for $6.4 million. Sculley expressed optimism about Ive’s involvement, stating, ‘If there’s anyone who is probably going to be able to bring that dimension to the LLM, in this case OpenAI, it’s probably going to be Jony Ive, working with Sam Altman.’

Sculley also offered advice regarding Apple’s future leadership, suggesting that whoever succeeds current CEO Tim Cook must be capable of guiding Apple into an AI-centric future, navigating the company through this critical transition where AI agents, rather than traditional apps, define the user experience. Jim Lanzone, CEO of Yahoo, who joined the panel, also emphasized the importance of a healthy source of content and apps to prevent the world from ending up with synthetic data, highlighting the open internet’s role in providing knowledge to large language models.
