Filmmaker Shakun Batra Explores AI’s Creative Potential, Addresses ‘Childhood Trauma’ Debate

TLDR: In recent interviews, acclaimed filmmaker Shakun Batra has delved into his extensive experimentation with Artificial Intelligence in filmmaking, including a five-part short film series created entirely with AI. He addresses the common dismissal of AI by stating, ‘Artificial Intelligence doesn’t have childhood trauma,’ emphasizing AI as a tool for artistic intent and a democratizing force for new filmmakers. Batra also shared an instance where a commercial client preferred an AI-generated shot over a traditionally filmed one, highlighting the technology’s rapid advancements and practical applications.

Acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shakun Batra has been at the forefront of a burgeoning discussion on the role of Artificial Intelligence in cinema, revealing his deep dive into AI-driven filmmaking and its potential to revolutionize the industry. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, among others, Batra provocatively stated, ‘Artificial Intelligence doesn’t have childhood trauma,’ a quote that encapsulates his view of AI as a powerful, objective tool rather than a sentient creative entity.

Batra, known for films like ‘Kapoor & Sons,’ has not just theorized about AI but has actively integrated it into his creative process. He has produced a five-part short film series entirely using Artificial Intelligence, showcasing the technology’s capabilities in crafting narratives and visuals. His journey into AI began seriously in November of the previous year, and by August, he had completed a high-production-value car chase film, a feat he wouldn’t have imagined possible even two years prior.

During a commercial shoot in February, Batra experimented by building a shot in AI, brick for brick, mirroring a complex setup on a real set. To his surprise, the client ultimately chose the AI-generated shot over the one filmed traditionally, a pivotal moment that solidified his belief in AI’s practical utility and rapid advancement. This experience, he notes, made him realize the immense possibilities that lie ahead for AI in filmmaking.

Addressing the skepticism surrounding AI, particularly the argument that it lacks the emotional depth derived from human experiences like ‘childhood trauma,’ Batra asserts that AI should be viewed as a tool. ‘What defines an artist is not the tool, but the intent,’ he explained. He believes that while AI may not possess human emotions, filmmakers can still use it to communicate their unique artistic intent and achieve intimacy in their storytelling.

Batra also champions AI as a democratizing force, particularly for aspiring filmmakers who often face significant financial and resource barriers. He highlighted that many film school graduates spend years assisting to save enough money for a short film, but AI tools could enable them to create their projects with a good idea and sufficient knowledge, even without traditional schooling. He himself learned many AI tools through YouTube tutorials and online courses.

While enthusiastic about AI’s potential, Batra acknowledges the critical conversations around ethics, ownership, and authorship that must accompany its adoption. He recognizes the need for safeguards, similar to those imposed in Hollywood regarding the use of AI to recreate actors’ images or voices, or for screenwriters. He anticipates that the Indian film industry will also need to navigate these complex issues soon, emphasizing that his embrace of AI does not blind him to its challenges.
