Figma Bolsters AI Capabilities with Enhanced Model Context Protocol and Remote Access for Design-to-Code Workflows

TLDR: Figma is significantly upgrading its AI agents and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to provide deeper integration with development tools and AI models. This enhancement includes remote access for MCP, allowing AI coding agents and IDEs to connect directly to Figma design context, and improved integration with Figma Make for more accurate code generation from designs. The move aims to transform Figma into a comprehensive design hub for the entire development process.

Figma, a leading design platform, is rolling out substantial enhancements to its artificial intelligence capabilities, focusing on making its AI agents smarter and more deeply integrated into the development workflow. The core of this upgrade revolves around the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source standard designed to connect AI tools with software applications and platforms. This strategic move is set to boost design-to-code efficiency and streamline product development.

A key feature of this announcement is the introduction of remote access for Figma’s MCP server. Previously, the MCP server primarily functioned as a gateway for design system and code structure information within Figma. Now, with remote access, users can connect to the platform from various integrated development environments (IDEs), AI coding agents, and browser-based models. This eliminates the prior reliance on the desktop application, offering greater flexibility and accessibility for developers and AI tools.

Furthermore, Figma is integrating MCP directly within Figma Make, its prompt-to-code tool launched at Config 2025. This integration allows AI models to access and understand the underlying code structure from Make files, rather than just rendered prototypes or images. This deeper contextual understanding enables more accurate and reusable code generation, facilitating the reference of logic and design patterns at the file level. Major partner platforms, including Anthropic, Cursor, Windsurf, and VS Code, are already supporting this feature, with plans for further third-party MCP server integrations for Figma Make.

Improvements have also been made to the Code Connect feature. What once required manual configuration via the command-line interface (CLI) for linking code and design components can now be mapped directly within the Figma interface. This visual mapping allows developers to quickly see which code components are connected, thereby enhancing the accuracy of AI-powered code generation and accelerating exploration.

Looking ahead, Figma plans to evolve the MCP server beyond a one-way transmission system to include a two-way connection. This future enhancement will allow external code context to be brought back into Figma, promising more realistic prototyping and a reduction in code rewriting and duplication. To ensure security and stability, Figma will introduce pre-screening for MCP clients and third-party integrations starting November 17th, and will also adjust usage limits for its REST API, though these changes are expected to impact only a minimal percentage of users.

These advancements underscore Figma’s vision to transcend its role as a simple design tool, transforming into a ‘design hub for all development processes.’ By defining all design artifacts—from design systems and interactive prototypes to annotated mockups and auto-generated code—as ‘active assets,’ Figma aims to empower designers and developers with new superpowers in an AI-native workflow.
