Family of Deceased OpenAI Researcher Funds Independent Death Probe with Cryptocurrency

TLDR: The family of Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher whose death was ruled a suicide by authorities in November 2024, has launched a cryptocurrency fundraising effort to finance an independent investigation. They dispute the official ruling, alleging a staged scene and mishandled inquiry, and have filed a lawsuit against San Francisco authorities. Balaji was known for his work in AI ethics and criticism of OpenAI’s data practices.

The family of Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI researcher, is leveraging cryptocurrency to fund an independent investigation into his death, which authorities in San Francisco officially ruled a suicide in November 2024. Balaji, found dead in his San Francisco apartment, was a prominent figure in AI ethics circles and had previously secured over $1.5 billion for an AI-focused initiative. His family, however, vehemently disputes the suicide ruling, alleging the scene was staged and that the investigation conducted by authorities was mishandled and potentially covered up.

To support their ongoing legal and investigative efforts, the family has turned to digital assets. This includes the launch of a Solana-based meme coin named “Justice for Suchir (SUCHIR)” on the Bags.FM platform in December 2024. While the SUCHIR token briefly peaked at $0.015, raising approximately $5,000, its value subsequently plummeted by over 99%, currently trading at $0.00006043. Despite this significant drop, the meme coin has contributed to a total of $11,499.35 raised through this specific channel. Prior to the meme coin, a separate cryptocurrency fundraiser in January 2025 successfully generated over $140,000 in Solana and other tokens. Poornima Rao, Balaji’s mother and family representative, stated that these crypto donations have been crucial in sustaining their efforts, especially when traditional funding avenues were unavailable. However, blockchain data indicates that the primary Solana wallet for the $140,000 campaign has not received new donations since April 2025, though the meme coin wallet continues to see small contributions.

The pursuit of an independent investigation has incurred substantial legal costs. One attorney reportedly billed the family $25,000 per hour before withdrawing, while a second lawyer charged $60,000. Additionally, Rao herself has spent $115,000 on investigation-related fees, bringing the total known expenditures well over $200,000. In February 2025, the family escalated their fight by filing a formal lawsuit against the City of San Francisco and the San Francisco Police Department, accusing them of withholding crucial evidence and failing to conduct a proper inquiry. Rao has highlighted the difficulty in securing reliable legal representation, noting that “Very few investigators know how to get the truth out.”

Suchir Balaji was known for his vocal criticism of OpenAI’s practices, particularly its alleged use of copyrighted material to train AI models like ChatGPT. Some speculate that his outspoken views may be connected to the controversial circumstances surrounding his death. OpenAI has maintained a neutral stance, refraining from public comment on the allegations. This case not only sheds light on the personal tragedy of Balaji’s family but also underscores the evolving role of cryptocurrency in funding legal advocacy outside traditional frameworks. It further reignites broader discussions within the AI industry concerning ethics, safety, governance, and the mental well-being of researchers.
