Expedia Group Forges Alliance with Perplexity to Launch AI-Powered Comet Browser, Offering Loyalty Rewards for Travelers

TLDR: Expedia Group has announced a strategic partnership with Perplexity for the launch of ‘Comet,’ a free, downloadable browser and artificial intelligence assistant. This collaboration aims to revolutionize travel planning by integrating AI-driven search and booking capabilities directly into the browser. To incentivize adoption, Expedia is offering users who download Comet Silver status in its OneKey loyalty program, marking the first time the company has extended its loyalty benefits to an external partner. The initiative reflects Expedia’s recognition of the growing influence of generative AI in consumer search behavior, particularly within the travel sector.

Expedia Group has officially unveiled a significant partnership with Perplexity, a move set to introduce ‘Comet,’ a new, free, and downloadable browser and artificial intelligence (AI) assistant, to the travel market. This collaboration is designed to streamline and enhance the travel planning and booking experience through advanced AI capabilities.

Comet, developed by Perplexity, functions as an AI assistant capable of comparing destinations and individual travel components, such as hotels. It can also generate personalized travel itineraries and facilitate seamless trip bookings. The browser features a dedicated ‘Travel’ interface under its home tab, complete with ‘Trending Destinations,’ ‘Inspiration’ sections, and a search bar. Initially available for desktop users, a mobile version is anticipated soon. The core of Comet’s functionality lies in its ability to combine natural language search with ‘agentic AI,’ allowing travelers to articulate their needs, after which Comet searches Expedia’s offerings, presents options, and assists with the booking process.

In a groundbreaking move, Expedia Group is leveraging this partnership to bolster its customer loyalty program. Travelers who download the Comet AI browser will be granted Silver status in Expedia’s OneKey loyalty program. Clayton Nelson, VP of strategic partnerships for Expedia Group, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, ‘This is the first-time we have opened our loyalty program to a partner.’ He further elaborated on the comprehensive nature of the collaboration: ‘This unique, multi-layered partnership brings loyalty, advertising and innovation together in one place, so travelers get rewarded just for experimenting with agentic AI tools.’

Expedia’s decision to invest in generative AI partnerships stems from a clear observation of evolving consumer behavior. Nelson noted that ‘Consumer search behavior is shifting to genAI search engines and this is especially true in travel.’ The company has witnessed generative AI traffic converting at ‘strong rates,’ indicating a significant shift in how consumers approach travel discovery and planning. The inherent complexity and time-consuming nature of traditional travel planning are areas where Comet is expected to provide substantial simplification. Nelson highlighted this, stating, ‘Perplexity Comet browser makes it easy by combining natural language search with agentic AI, letting travelers type what they’re looking for while Comet searches Expedia, surfaces options and helps them to book a trip.’ Furthermore, the integration allows for flexibility, enabling travelers to switch between AI assistance and traditional browsing even when on Expedia’s platform, underscoring the rapid evolution and expanding utility of these AI products.
