Elix and LINC Unveil World’s First Commercial Federated AI Platform for Drug Discovery

This groundbreaking platform integrates AI models trained on confidential data from 16 pharmaceutical companies without direct data sharing, addressing a critical challenge in drug discovery by enabling collaborative development while maintaining data privacy.

Tokyo, Japan – Elix, Inc., a leading AI drug discovery company, in collaboration with the Life Intelligence Consortium (LINC), has announced the commercialization of Elix Discovery™, the world’s first AI drug discovery platform powered by federated learning. This innovative platform marks a significant milestone in pharmaceutical research, enabling collaborative AI model development across multiple companies while rigorously protecting proprietary data.

The Elix Discovery™ platform integrates sophisticated AI models that have been trained on diverse datasets contributed by 16 pharmaceutical companies. A core challenge in AI-driven drug discovery has been the scarcity of large, high-quality datasets due to the confidential nature of pharmaceutical research. Federated learning, a technique that allows AI models to be trained on decentralized datasets without the data ever leaving its original source, provides a robust solution to this problem.

Developed in partnership with Kyoto University and through Japan’s AMED-funded DAIIA (Development of a Next-generation Drug Discovery AI through Industry-academia Collaboration) initiative, the system leverages Elix’s proprietary federated learning library, kMoL. This technology ensures secure, decentralized training, allowing pharmaceutical companies to contribute to the collective intelligence of the AI models while maintaining the confidentiality of their sensitive data. The DAIIA project, which involved 17 pharmaceutical companies, research institutes, and IT companies, concluded in March 2025, with commercialization commencing in April 2025.

The resulting AI models within Elix Discovery™ offer enhanced accuracy and support a wide range of critical predictions, including on/off-target effects, ADMET (Absorption, Distribution, Metabolism, Excretion, and Toxicity) properties, and advanced molecular generation. This capability is expected to dramatically improve the efficiency of the drug discovery process by enabling efficient design of promising drug candidate compounds and narrowing down synthesis and evaluation targets.

Eisai Co., Ltd., a prominent Japanese pharmaceutical company, has already adopted Elix Discovery™. Taro Terauchi, Head of Integrated Chemistry at Eisai, commented on the adoption, stating, “Eisai has been working to integrate the small-molecule drug-discovery expertise we have cultivated over many years with cutting-edge AI technology. We expect that the introduction of Elix Discovery™ will further accelerate this integration and drive major innovation in the drug-discovery process.
