ElevenLabs’ Global Ascent: A Unique Approach to AI Voice Technology

TLDR: ElevenLabs, an AI company founded by Mati Staniszewski and Piotr Dąbkowski, has rapidly become a leader in AI-generated speech, music, and conversational agents. Its unique origin, global team, and strategic approach, particularly its European base, have provided a distinct advantage in developing natural-sounding voices and fostering collaboration with the creative industry. Backed by significant funding, including a recent Series C round valuing it at $3.3 billion, ElevenLabs aims to break down language barriers and revolutionize content interaction.

ElevenLabs, a pioneering artificial intelligence company, has rapidly emerged as a significant player in the generative AI landscape, specializing in creating remarkably natural and human-like voices. Founded in 2022 by former Google engineer Piotr Dąbkowski and ex-Palantir strategist Mati Staniszewski, the company’s journey began with a deceptively simple yet ambitious goal: to imbue machines with voices as natural as our own. This mission was deeply personal for the founders, who experienced frustration with the often-poor quality of single-narrator voiceovers in their native Poland, highlighting a critical market gap for realistic speech synthesis.

Andreessen Horowitz, a prominent venture capital firm, highlighted ElevenLabs’ unique story, emphasizing that ‘where you build is who you are.’ The company’s distinct origin, coupled with its geographical advantages and a unique company culture, has provided a differentiated edge from day one. Mati Staniszewski noted that ‘Being in Europe is an edge for building a voice company and expanding globally. There are unique pains and opportunities that only non-native English speakers can appreciate.’ This perspective has enabled ElevenLabs to build a truly global team, a necessity in the nuanced field of voice AI.

In just three years, ElevenLabs has scaled rapidly, evolving into one of the fastest-growing AI companies. It has expanded its offerings beyond voice synthesis to encompass a full creative ecosystem, including AI-generated music and conversational agents. The company’s strategic approach extends to everything from research and product timelines to balancing feedback from both consumer and enterprise customers. While research remains paramount in their AI lab, ElevenLabs is prepared to bridge gaps with product development if research solutions aren’t feasible within a three-month timeframe.

ElevenLabs has also made significant strides in collaborating with the creative industry, a sector often wary of AI’s disruptive potential. For its music initiatives, the company partnered with major labels, including the ‘Big Four’ and Kobalt, to develop a licensed music model. This complex agreement took 18 months to finalize, underscoring ElevenLabs’ commitment to transparency and engagement with artists and labels to demystify the technology and avoid negative perceptions. This approach positions ElevenLabs as a company working with the creative industry to build the future, rather than bulldozing its past.

Financially, ElevenLabs has attracted substantial investment, reflecting its groundbreaking technology and market potential. The company secured a $2 million pre-seed round in January 2023, followed by a $19 million Series A in June 2023, which valued the company at approximately $100 million. A pivotal moment came on January 22, 2024, with an $80 million Series B funding round, co-led by Andreessen Horowitz, Nat Friedman, and Daniel Gross, pushing its valuation to $1.1 billion and achieving unicorn status. Most recently, in January 2025, ElevenLabs raised a substantial $180 million in a Series C round, bringing its valuation to an impressive $3.3 billion. Bryan Kim, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, expressed the firm’s strong conviction, stating, ‘I just knew we had to be part of what ElevenLabs was building. Their voice AI technology is groundbreaking, and the momentum behind them was undeniable.’

ElevenLabs’ technology is already widely adopted, with its tools reportedly used by employees at 41% of Fortune 500 companies. The company has amassed over 1 million registered users who have collectively generated more than 10 years’ worth of audio content. Future plans include developing a ‘dubbing studio’ to enable users to dub entire movies, generating transcripts, translations, and timecodes. CEO Mati Staniszewski reiterated the company’s overarching ambition: ‘Our ambition remains the same – to transform how we interact with content by breaking down language and communication barriers… We’re building cutting-edge technology to make content accessible across languages – and voices – to enable everyone to connect with information and stories that matter.’
