TLDR: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has partnered with BytePlus to organize a Generative AI Hackathon, leveraging open data to develop intelligent solutions for public transportation. The event, held on September 15, 2025, engaged over 70 students from UAE universities to address challenges in journey planning, accident analysis, location intelligence, and mobility trends, with significant cash prizes and BytePlus tokens awarded to top innovators.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has joined forces with BytePlus, a leading technology provider, to host a pioneering Generative AI Hackathon. The initiative, titled ‘Generative AI Meets Open Data,’ took place on September 15, 2025, and aimed to harness the power of artificial intelligence and large language models (LLMs) to revolutionize urban mobility in Dubai. The hackathon successfully attracted more than 70 students from various colleges and universities across the UAE, underscoring a strong interest in technological innovation within the academic community .

The event, organized by RTA’s Public Transport Agency in collaboration with the Corporate Technology Support Services Sector, challenged participants to develop intelligent agents capable of answering complex queries related to Dubai’s public transportation system. The core objective was to utilize open data from Dubai Pulse, a government data platform, to create impactful solutions .

Participants tackled several critical areas within urban mobility:

Journey Planning: Developing optimal routes, modes of transport, and timing, considering factors like cost, duration, accessibility, and user preferences to enhance convenience and reduce travel time .

Accident Analysis: Examining historical accident data to identify key causes, high-risk areas, and recurring patterns, helping to uncover underlying factors such as human error, environmental conditions, or infrastructure issues .

Location Intelligence: Analyzing spatial and movement data to understand how people interact with transit systems across different areas and times, enabling insights into busiest routes or underserved areas .

Mobility Trends: Analyzing historical and real-time ridership data to highlight peak usage times, popular routes, and shifting commuter behaviors, providing insights into travel demand and service optimization .

The hackathon offered substantial incentives for innovation. The top three solutions were awarded cash prizes and BytePlus tokens to support future development. The first-place team received AED 5,000, the second-place team AED 3,000, and the third-place team AED 2,000.
