Digital Health Sector Navigates Mixed Q2: Emerging Players Show Strength While GLP-1 Market Faces Headwinds

TLDR: The second quarter of 2025 presented a varied landscape for digital health companies. While newer entrants like HealthWarehouse.com and DarioHealth demonstrated robust growth and improved financial metrics, major GLP-1 drug manufacturers, notably Novo Nordisk, encountered significant challenges including pricing pressures, market competition from compounded alternatives, and revised financial outlooks. Eli Lilly also faced pricing pressure on its weight loss drugs despite strong sales of Zepbound. UnitedHealth Group reported a fall in Q2 earnings, grappling with higher medical costs. The sector’s performance highlights a dynamic environment where innovation and operational efficiency, including AI-driven improvements, are key to success.

The second quarter of 2025 revealed a bifurcated performance within the digital health sector, with agile new players demonstrating robust growth and efficiency, while established pharmaceutical giants in the GLP-1 market grappled with pricing pressures and intense competition.

Among the success stories, DarioHealth Corp. reported Q2 2025 revenues of $5.4 million. While this marked a decline from $6.3 million in Q2 2024 and $6.8 million in Q1 2025, the company attributed this shift to the non-renewal of a large national health plan and a strategic pivot towards a SaaS-like recurring revenue model. Notably, DarioHealth maintained impressive non-GAAP gross margins of approximately 80% in its core B2B2C business since Q1 2024. The company also significantly reduced its operating expenses by 36% year-over-year to $12.2 million, down from $18.9 million in Q2 2024. This reduction was driven by post-merger integration, operational efficiencies, offshore initiatives, and critically, AI-enabled efficiencies, leading to a 43% improvement in operating loss, narrowing it from $16.2 million to $9.2 million. DarioHealth’s differentiated GLP-1 support program remains a key entry point in its Employer segment, serving as a digital utilization management solution to control medication costs.

HealthWarehouse.com, Inc. also showcased strong performance, reporting net sales of $15.7 million for Q2 2025, a remarkable 182% increase from the same period in 2024, primarily fueled by a 495% surge in partner services revenues. The company moved into profitability, reporting a net income of $228,000 for the quarter, a significant turnaround from a net loss of $344,000 in Q2 2024, alongside an Adjusted EBITDA of $609,000. HealthWarehouse.com anticipates an impact on its results from the third quarter onwards due to the FDA’s announcement ending the shortage of certain GLP-1 drugs like tirzepatide and semaglutide, which will affect pharmacies and telehealth providers that had been offering compounded versions.

Conversely, major players in the GLP-1 drug market faced headwinds. Novo Nordisk A/S reported Q2 2025 earnings of 97 cents per American Depositary Receipt (ADR), surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 93 cents, and revenues of $11.68 billion, a 13% year-over-year increase in Danish kroner. However, the company revised its 2025 outlook downwards, now expecting sales to increase by 8-14% (down from 13-21%) and operating profit to grow by 10-16% (down from 16-24%) at constant exchange rates. This revision stems from weaker-than-anticipated momentum for key drugs Wegovy and Ozempic, particularly in the U.S. market, where unregulated, compounded GLP-1 alternatives continue to pose a challenge, prompting Novo Nordisk to pursue legal and regulatory actions. The company’s shares have seen a significant plunge of 45.1% year-to-date.

Eli Lilly, another major player in the weight loss drug market, also highlighted pricing pressure for its medications, including the forthcoming orforglipron, during its second-quarter earnings call. This pressure is exacerbated by intense market competition with Novo Nordisk and ongoing government demands for lower prescription drug costs. Despite these challenges, Lilly’s Zepbound demonstrated a significant increase in sales during the quarter.

In the broader healthcare sector, UnitedHealth Group reported a fall in its Q2 2025 earnings, although revenue saw a rise, and the company reestablished its 2025 guidance. The company faced challenges with higher-than-forecast medical expenses, which raised concerns about profitability and cost management amidst ongoing macroeconomic pressures in the healthcare sector. Market sentiment around UnitedHealth was notably bearish following the earnings report, with investors closely monitoring the company’s strategies to address rising costs.
