Dell Technologies and Meta Forge Alliance to Accelerate On-Premises Generative AI Deployments

TLDR: Dell Technologies and Meta have partnered to simplify the on-premises deployment of Meta’s Llama 2 generative AI models. This collaboration leverages Dell’s comprehensive GenAI portfolio, including validated designs, infrastructure, and services, to enable organizations to more easily and securely implement powerful AI solutions within their own data centers and at edge locations.

In a significant move to democratize access to generative artificial intelligence, Dell Technologies and Meta announced a strategic collaboration to streamline the on-premises deployment of Meta’s Llama 2 models. This partnership, initially unveiled in late October and early November 2023, aims to make powerful GenAI capabilities more accessible to businesses of all sizes, enabling them to harness AI for innovation and digital transformation.

The core of this collaboration revolves around integrating Meta’s Llama 2 family of AI models with Dell’s extensive generative AI portfolio. This portfolio encompasses a wide array of IT infrastructure, client devices, and professional services designed to support AI initiatives. A key offering is the Dell Validated Design for Generative AI with Meta’s Llama 2, which provides customers with a pre-tested and proven foundation of software and hardware. This ready-made solution is purpose-built to accelerate GenAI efforts, offering fully documented deployment and configuration guidance to ensure quicker setup and more predictable operation of Llama 2.

Jeff Boudreau, Chief AI Officer at Dell Technologies, emphasized the transformative potential of this alliance. “We are at the beginning of a new era with generative AI transforming how industries operate, innovate and compete,” Boudreau stated. He added, “With the Dell and Meta technology collaboration, we’re making open-source GenAI more accessible to all customers, through detailed implementation guidance paired with the optimal software and hardware infrastructure for deployments of all sizes. Now, customers can more easily deploy secure GenAI models on premises for powerful new approaches and insights.”

The focus on on-premises deployment addresses critical considerations such as data privacy, security of intellectual property, and data gravity. Chris Kelly, Senior Vice President of Data Centre Sales for Asia Pacific and Japan at Dell Technologies, highlighted this aspect: “Generative AI deployments can span multiple locations and we see many organisations prioritising on-premises solutions – given critical considerations related to data privacy and security of IP, as well as the impact of data gravity.” Kelly further noted that the integration of Llama 2 into Dell’s GenAI portfolio will significantly aid organizations in accelerating their digital transformation by enhancing interactions with customers, employees, and the broader market.

This collaboration simplifies the on-premises AI environment, allowing customers to accelerate their GenAI efforts whether in traditional data centers or at edge locations. The partnership underscores a growing trend towards open-source AI within the technology sector, fostering collaboration to develop responsible and ethical machine learning systems.
