TLDR: Coursera showcased its latest AI-powered educational innovations, including “Role Play” for soft skills development and an expanded “Course Builder” utilizing GenAI, at its Bengaluru Connect 2025 event. The platform also introduced “Skill Tracks” to provide career-aligned learning paths. The event, attended by academic, government, and industry leaders, featured a keynote by Dr. M.C. Sudhakar, Karnataka’s Minister for Higher Education, who highlighted the state’s commitment to integrating skill-based and AI-driven learning into its educational framework.

Coursera, a leading global online learning platform, recently unveiled its next-generation AI-powered learning innovations at the Bengaluru Connect 2025 event, held last week in India’s technology hub. This second regional Coursera Connect gathering brought together prominent figures from academia, government, and industry to deliberate on the evolving landscape of learning and work in an AI-first era.

At the forefront of Coursera’s announcements were several new and enhanced AI-driven product innovations designed to deliver more personalized, scalable, and impactful learning experiences. Among these is “Role Play,” a novel course activity that leverages AI personas to enable learners to develop crucial soft skills through dynamic, real-world simulated interactions. This initiative aims to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, preparing learners for complex professional scenarios.

Furthermore, Coursera announced the significant expansion of its “Course Builder” platform. This GenAI-powered authoring tool empowers institutions to design high-quality courses with greater speed and precision, facilitating the integration of hands-on tools and the creation of robust assessments. The company also introduced “Skill Tracks,” data-driven learning paths meticulously mapped to specific job roles, guiding learners from foundational concepts to expert proficiency.

The event was inaugurated with a keynote address by Dr. M.C. Sudhakar, the Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Government of Karnataka. Dr. Sudhakar articulated the state’s vision for educational transformation, emphasizing Karnataka’s proactive efforts to embed skill-based learning directly into technical curricula and align education with contemporary industry demands. He highlighted substantial investments and infrastructure development supporting these initiatives, including job-readiness training with apprenticeship opportunities for students and the establishment of nine Centres of Excellence for skilling to bolster state-run colleges. The Minister also underscored the critical importance of faculty development in this transformative journey and called for deeper collaboration between industry and academia to ensure education remains responsive to evolving workforce needs. He further discussed Karnataka’s tailored education policy, designed to complement the National Education Policy (NEP).

Ashutosh Gupta, Managing Director, India and Asia Pacific, Coursera, commented on the synergy between Coursera’s offerings and Karnataka’s educational goals. “Karnataka has long been a leader in technology and innovation, and is now taking thoughtful steps to advance education and skills,” said Gupta. “As the state reimagines technical education and integrates AI-driven skills into its learning ecosystem, we see tremendous opportunity to support this vision. Through deep partnerships across government, academia, and industry, and with the power of AI-powered learning tools, we’re committed to preparing learners in Karnataka with the skills and confidence they need to thrive in the jobs of tomorrow.”
