Corporate Travel Sector Grapples with AI Adoption Amidst Buyer Trust Deficit

TLDR: New research reveals that only one in ten corporate travel buyers currently trust AI-generated recommendations for bookings, itineraries, or travel policy support. Despite AI’s transformative impact on other sectors like finance and retail, the corporate travel industry faces significant hurdles in adoption, primarily due to issues of trust, compliance, and data quality. However, a notable 30% of buyers plan to integrate AI-powered dynamic pricing within the next year, indicating a potential shift.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping various industries, from finance to retail, promising enhanced efficiency and innovation. However, in the corporate travel sector, the integration of AI faces a substantial challenge: a pervasive lack of buyer trust. According to new research presented at the Business Travel Show America, a mere 10% of corporate travel buyers currently place their trust in AI-generated recommendations for bookings, itineraries, or travel policy support. This skepticism extends to AI-powered dynamic pricing insights, with only 10% of buyers utilizing them, although a third (30%) anticipate adopting them within the coming year.

Travel managers have articulated clear expectations for how AI can improve their operations in the next 12 months. Their top priorities include:

Automation of routine administrative tasks to free up time for strategic initiatives (25%).

Real-time updates on disruptions, such as cancellations and delays (23%).

Stronger data-driven insights to optimize budgets and policies (21%).

Personalized itineraries tailored to individual traveler needs (14%).

Streamlined expense management (7%).

More efficient reporting (7%).

Steve Clagg, a Corporate Travel Technology Consultant and judge for the Innovation Faceoff award at the event, highlighted that the sector is undergoing an ‘unprecedented evolution’ where AI adoption will be a key determinant of competitive advantage. Despite the potential for agentic AI to autonomously manage tasks like rebookings and expense exceptions, and generative AI to provide real-time personalized updates, Clagg emphasized the critical role of human input and AI literacy.

“The success of AI is determined just as much by human input as the data it uses,” Steve Clagg stated. He urged corporate travel managers to invest in their own training and understanding to cultivate trust, which he believes is essential for improving traveler experience, compliance, and budget management.

With corporate travel spending on the rebound and employee expectations on the rise, the industry is at a crossroads. It must navigate the delicate balance between the promise of AI-driven efficiency and persistent concerns regarding trust, compliance, and data quality. The research suggests that while adoption is expected to increase, gaining the full confidence of buyers will hinge on transparency, comprehensive training, and demonstrable value.
