Coinbase Launches ‘Payments MCP’ to Empower AI Agents with On-Chain Financial Capabilities

TLDR: Coinbase has introduced Payments MCP, a new tool designed to integrate artificial intelligence agents, including large language models like Claude and Gemini, directly into the crypto economy. This initiative allows AI agents to autonomously access on-chain financial tools such as crypto wallets and stablecoin payments, fostering a new era of ‘agentic commerce’.

Coinbase, a leading U.S. cryptocurrency exchange, announced on October 22, 2025, the launch of ‘Payments MCP’ (Model Context Protocol), a groundbreaking tool aimed at enabling artificial intelligence agents to engage directly with on-chain financial systems. This development marks a significant step towards ‘agentic commerce,’ where AI models can not only analyze and recommend but also execute financial transactions autonomously.

Payments MCP is designed to provide AI agents, including popular large language models (LLMs) such as Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and Codex, with access to essential financial tools. These include crypto wallets, on-ramps for fiat currency, and stablecoin payment capabilities, all accessible through natural language prompts. The tool operates locally on a user’s desktop, prioritizing both speed and security.

Key features of Payments MCP highlight its user-centric design and functionality. It facilitates wallet creation and sign-in using just an email, eliminating the need for complex developer setups or API keys. Users can customize their agents, set spending limits, and manage transactions through a user-friendly interface. Furthermore, an integrated x402 Bazaar Explorer allows agents to discover and pay for various APIs and services directly within the user interface. The platform also supports built-in on-ramps and guest checkout in supported regions, enabling instant transactions with minimal user input.

The underlying technology for Payments MCP is the x402 payment protocol, an open standard introduced by Coinbase in May. This protocol leverages the HTTP ‘402 Payment Required’ status code to embed stablecoin payments into web interactions. The launch of Payments MCP closely follows the announcement of the x402 Foundation, an initiative spearheaded by Coinbase and Cloudflare, dedicated to standardizing AI payments.

Dan Kim, VP of business development and listings at Coinbase, and Erik Reppel, head of engineering of the Coinbase Developer Platform, emphasized the strategic importance of this innovation. They stated, ‘Payments MCP extends this vision by giving AI agents the same onchain financial tools humans use, from wallets and onramps to stablecoin payments, all accessible through natural language.’ They further noted that ‘crypto rails – and stablecoins in particular – are the ideal payment infrastructure for agentic commerce. They move at the speed of code, integrate seamlessly with APIs, and enable autonomous agents to act without human friction.’ This integration, they believe, bridges the gap between AI and decentralized finance, allowing LLMs to natively connect to the crypto economy for the first time.

This move by Coinbase aligns with the growing trend of agentic commerce, where AI agents are increasingly capable of performing real-world economic actions. However, a recent collaboration between PYMNTS Intelligence and Visa, ‘The Prompt Economyâ„¢: How AI Agents Turn Conversation Into Commerce,’ revealed that despite the rise of agentic commerce, only 15% of chief financial officers at large enterprises were piloting agentic AI due to concerns about data security, governance, and trust issues. Coinbase’s Payments MCP aims to address these concerns by providing a secure and autonomous framework for AI financial interactions.
