TLDR: Cohere has officially launched North, an AI agent platform designed for secure, private deployment within enterprises and government organizations. North enables companies to leverage advanced AI capabilities like chat, search, and document generation while keeping sensitive data behind their own firewalls, addressing critical data privacy and compliance concerns. The platform aims to automate routine tasks, enhancing workforce productivity.
Toronto-based AI firm Cohere has announced the general availability of its highly anticipated North platform, an all-in-one secure AI workspace designed to revolutionize how enterprises and government entities deploy and utilize artificial intelligence. Following a successful early access program that commenced in January, North is now broadly available, focusing on addressing the critical data security and privacy concerns that have historically hindered AI adoption in regulated industries.
North is engineered to combine large language models (LLMs), advanced search capabilities, and automation into a single, intuitive platform. Its core functionality revolves around enabling organizations to create and deploy custom AI agents that can perform a wide array of tasks. These include intelligent chat interactions, comprehensive information retrieval across diverse data repositories, and the creation of various documents and assets such, as summarizing reports, drafting marketing copy, generating financial reports, and even producing tables and slideshows. The system is powered by a variant of Cohere’s Command family of generative AI models and its proprietary Compass search technology, ensuring that all responses are verifiable with citations and reasoning chains.
A cornerstone of the North platform is its robust security architecture and flexible deployment options. It is designed for private deployment, supporting on-premise infrastructure, hybrid clouds, Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), and even air-gapped environments. This ensures that sensitive corporate and government data remains securely within an organization’s own firewalls, never accessible outside their control. Cohere emphasizes that North includes stringent security features such as granular access control, agent autonomy policies, a zero-trust security model, and audit-ready monitoring. The platform is built to comply with major international standards, including GDPR, SOC-2, and ISO 27001. Remarkably, North is optimized to run on minimal hardware, requiring as few as two GPUs, lowering the barrier to entry for internal AI adoption.
Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst highlighted the platform’s purpose, stating, “It is a tool for augmenting and automating all of the work you do behind a computer that you would rather not do.” North aims to offload “boring, monotonous, and bureaucratic” tasks, thereby freeing up human employees to focus on more creative and high-value work. Frosst clarified that while North significantly boosts productivity, it is designed to augment rather than entirely automate jobs, impacting a “relatively small percentage” of overall work.
The platform has already seen significant traction with major enterprises during its early access phase. Piloting customers include prominent names such as Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), Dell, LG, Ensemble Health Partners, Palantir, and Bell. Notably, RBC and Cohere collaborated to develop ‘North for Banking,’ a customized platform tailored for the financial sector’s unique needs. Additionally, a strategic partnership with Bell Canada will provide sovereign AI solutions and access to Canadian AI infrastructure.

Cohere, founded in 2019 and recently valued at $5.5 billion after raising $970 million, positions North as a direct competitor to other enterprise AI offerings, including Microsoft 365 Copilot and OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise. The company’s business model for North is based on a subscription fee tied to the number of users, reflecting its commitment to delivering tangible return on investment for its clients.
