TLDR: The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has unveiled an upgraded CGMA Professional Qualification syllabus for 2026, designed to equip finance professionals with advanced skills in finance business partnering, analytical thinking, strategic planning, sustainability, and cutting-edge financial technologies like Generative AI. This continuous improvement approach, moving away from traditional five-year overhauls, aims to meet the rapid pace of business transformation and the growing demand for digitally savvy finance experts.
London, UK – August 22, 2025 – The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has announced a significant upgrade to its Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA) Professional Qualification syllabus, set to take effect in 2026. This enhancement is a direct response to the rapidly evolving global finance landscape, aiming to prepare future finance professionals for roles as high-performance business partners capable of leveraging technology and applying critical thinking skills.
The updated syllabus emphasizes key competencies such as finance business partnering, analytical thinking, and strategic planning. It also broadens its scope to incorporate crucial contemporary topics, including sustainability – encompassing green finance, environmental costing, and disclosures under IFRS S1/S2 – and cutting-edge financial technologies, notably Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) .
This proactive approach by AICPA & CIMA, the global voice of the accounting and finance profession, moves away from the traditional five-year syllabus overhaul. Instead, it adopts a strategy of continuous improvement, refreshing the qualification annually since 2019 to align with the swift pace of business transformation .
Andrew Harding, FCMA, CGMA, Chief Executive – Management Accounting at AICPA & CIMA, highlighted the distinction of the new syllabus: “This year’s update to the CGMA Professional Qualification syllabus sets it apart from traditional accounting and finance education, which still focuses heavily on preparing information, controls, and compliance – tasks increasingly automated by technology. The CGMA Professional Qualification is designed for the future of finance; created by finance professionals to equip future finance professionals with skills they need to be value creators” .
The rationale behind this upgrade is firmly rooted in extensive research, including AICPA & CIMA’s “Future of Finance 2.0” and the World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report 2025.” These reports collectively predict that the synergy of technology and human insight will be paramount for career success in the knowledge economy and indispensable for future accounting and finance roles .
The demand for digitally savvy finance professionals currently outstrips supply, underscoring the urgency of these changes .
Stephen Flatman, M.Ed., Vice President of Education and Professional Qualifications, Management Accounting at AICPA & CIMA, elaborated on the practical application of the new curriculum: “With a focus on finance role simulations embedded in our Case Study exams, the CGMA Professional Qualification allows finance professionals to quickly develop and apply cognitive, digital, and technical skills needed as finance business partners. Our unique problem-solving educational approach helps them provide expert advice, support decision-making, and create value for organisations” .
The 2025 PQ upgrade specifically addresses four key shifts in the finance function:
1. Technology and Automation: The proliferation of data and automated reports necessitates professional skepticism and judgment to extract actionable insights, demanding higher-order human skills like critical thinking and problem-solving .
2. Changing Perception of Value: Society’s definition of value has significantly evolved .
3. Adopting a Longer-Term Time Horizon: Finance professionals need to effectively allocate resources and capital towards innovative strategic projects for transitional business models and a circular economy, requiring significantly longer-term forecasting .
4. Expanding Stakeholder Relationship Management: Beyond traditional investors and regulators, this now includes employees, suppliers, distributors, customers, and impacted communities .
To support students transitioning to the new syllabus, CIMA will launch a comprehensive Case Study and Objective Tests study support materials pack in October. Additionally, CIMA has developed over 50 hours of free study support materials to assist candidates in their preparation for the May 2026 CGMA exams . These changes do not impact learners taking CGMA exams in 2025 .

This ensures that CGMA-qualified finance professionals are well-equipped to contribute effectively to organizational success and drive value creation in a dynamic global economy .
