Chulalongkorn University is making significant strides in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive innovation across its learning and research ecosystems. The university’s commitment to this technological transformation was underscored by a series of prominent events in 2025, including a major international public lecture and a comprehensive seminar on AI’s societal impact.
On September 5, 2025, the Social Research Institute of Chulalongkorn University hosted an international public lecture titled “AI in Higher Education for Innovation in Learning & Research” at Chula Narumit House. The event featured Dr. Muthu Kumar Chandrasekaran, an expert in artificial intelligence and computer technology and former Applied Science Manager at Amazon AI, as the keynote speaker. The lecture was officially opened by Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, President of Chulalongkorn University, with Associate Professor Dr. Unruan Leknoi, Director of the Social Research Institute, delivering welcoming remarks. A panel discussion, including Dr. Philip Soung Soo Cho from Chula’s Social Research Institute, further enriched the discourse.
The primary objectives of this lecture were to foster knowledge exchange on AI between international experts and Thai academics, and to provide guidance for elevating the quality of teaching and research in Thai universities to meet global standards. Discussions highlighted the evolution of AI applications from the MOOC era (2012–2020), which focused on automated grading and intelligent tutoring, to the current era of Generative AI and Agentic AI, enabling highly personalized learning experiences, including personal AI tutors. The event also emphasized building international networks for collaboration and empowering Thai society through AI literacy, inclusive AI policies, equitable access to AI tools, and sustainable investment in data centers. Despite concerns about AI’s potential to disrupt labor markets, the lecture stressed the creation of new career opportunities and the critical need for workforce reskilling and upskilling.
Further demonstrating its leadership, Chulalongkorn University, through its Social Research Institute and research network, organized the academic seminar “AI for Society 2025: Artificial Intelligence Shaping Thailand’s Future” on June 20, 2025. Held at the Social Innovation Hub, the seminar aimed to generate new ideas and establish ethical, inclusive, and sustainable approaches to AI implementation in Thai society. Professor Dr. Wilert Puriwat, in his keynote speech, asserted that “Education must not only provide technological literacy but also cultivate new social structures where everyone can equally participate in an AI-powered future.”
The seminar delved into the opportunities AI presents for enhancing Thai society’s capabilities, while also addressing the risks of increasing inequality and marginalizing vulnerable groups. A study on “AI in Thai Society,” presented by the Institute’s researchers, revealed a significant lack of AI literacy among many Thais, particularly highlighting the risk of job displacement for lower-skilled labor and potential ethical concerns regarding AI’s impact on student creativity in education. The event also featured an interactive AI exhibition and a panel discussion titled “Thailand Reimagined: When AI Designs the Future,” which explored solutions for inclusive AI policies, safeguarding civil rights, and preventing algorithmic biases. Chulalongkorn University also recognized innovative Generative AI works for public good with seven awards, inspiring young talent and entrepreneurs.
