Rice University Integrates Google’s Generative AI for Enhanced Learning and Faculty Support

TLDR: Rice University has officially adopted Google for Education’s generative AI solution, Gemini for Education, to empower its students, faculty, and staff with advanced AI tools. This initiative, launched on September 16, 2025, aims to personalize learning, boost creativity, and prepare students for a technology-driven future, while ensuring data privacy and security.

Rice University has announced a significant partnership with Google for Education, integrating Google’s generative AI solution, Gemini for Education, across its campus. This strategic move, effective September 16, 2025, provides students, faculty, and staff with access to powerful, responsible AI tools, including Gemini and NotebookLM, designed to revolutionize learning, enhance creativity, and better equip students for an evolving, technology-driven world.

All faculty and staff members at Rice now have access to the FERPA-compliant Google Gemini and NotebookLM through their existing Rice accounts. Gemini, an intelligent AI assistant, offers capabilities such as summarizing content, generating ideas, accelerating writing, and supporting research by quickly distilling academic papers and providing insight-driven summaries. Complementing this, NotebookLM is tailored to help users work with their own content—be it PDFs, documents, web links, or transcripts—by synthesizing information across various sources to surface insights and support content creation grounded in their materials.

To facilitate the adoption and understanding of these new tools, representatives from Google for Education visited Rice on September 10 as part of a national college campus tour. The visit included a ‘Gemini Academy,’ a dynamic event featuring hands-on training led by Google product experts, which saw hundreds of students participate. Concurrently, a six-hour pop-up event in the Academic Quadrangle offered interactive product demonstrations and practical tips to over 1,000 students. Faculty members also engaged in a dedicated lunch-and-learn session, focusing on leveraging these AI tools to enhance their teaching methodologies.

Kelly Fox, executive vice president for operations, finance and support at Rice, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. “We’re excited to see how these tools will support the collective work of the campus community and how they might inspire new ways to collaborate and innovate,” Fox stated. She added, “This initiative reflects Rice’s commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology to empower our campus with advanced AI capabilities across teaching, research and administrative work.”

Steven Butschi, director of Google for Education North America sales, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the collaborative spirit. “Google for Education is proud to partner with Rice University on this important expansion of learning tools to students and teachers,” Butschi remarked. He further emphasized, “This collaboration is a testament to our shared belief that generative AI, when implemented responsibly, can be a powerful tool for enhancing creativity, personalizing learning and preparing students for the future. We’re excited to see how Gemini will support Rice’s mission and inspire a new generation of innovators.”

The partnership also underscores a strong commitment to privacy and security. All interactions with Gemini for Education are managed within Rice’s secure Google Workspace for Education domain. Google has assured that conversations are not used to train models, and schools retain administrative control over their data, ensuring a responsible and protected environment for AI integration.
