Christopher Nolan Elected President of Directors Guild of America Amidst Industry Transformation

TLDR: Oscar-winning filmmaker Christopher Nolan has been elected as the new President of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), succeeding Lesli Linka Glatter. Nolan, known for his cinematic achievements and advocacy for the theatrical experience, will lead the union of 19,500 members through a period of significant industry change, focusing on creative and economic protections for directors.

Christopher Nolan, the acclaimed Oscar-winning director behind cinematic masterpieces such as ‘Oppenheimer,’ has been elected to lead the Directors Guild of America (DGA), the organization announced late Saturday, September 21, 2025. Nolan, 55, expressed his profound gratitude, stating, ‘To be elected President of the Directors Guild of America is one of the greatest honors of my career.’

The DGA, which represents approximately 19,500 film and television directors, assistant directors, unit production managers, and stage managers across the United States and internationally, also hosts the prestigious DGA awards annually. Nolan’s election comes at a pivotal time for the entertainment industry, which is grappling with rapid technological advancements and evolving business models. ‘Our industry is experiencing tremendous change, and I thank the Guild’s membership for entrusting me with this responsibility,’ Nolan remarked.

Nolan’s involvement with the DGA is extensive; he has been a member since 2001 and has served on its National Board and Western Directors Council since 2015. Notably, he has also chaired the guild’s theatrical creative rights and artificial intelligence committees, indicating his engagement with critical issues facing filmmakers today. His leadership is expected to bring a strong voice to discussions surrounding creative and economic protections for members, particularly as the DGA’s current three-year basic agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) is set to expire next year. The AMPTP, which bargains on behalf of studios and streamers, has already extended its congratulations, expressing eagerness to partner with President Nolan.

A staunch champion of the theatrical experience and traditional film stock, Nolan’s recent success with ‘Oppenheimer’ underscored the enduring appeal of large-format film. The movie, shot entirely on a combination of 70mm and IMAX film, grossed over $976 million worldwide, prompting many in the industry to re-evaluate the mass audience potential of a format once considered on the brink of extinction. Nolan, alongside other filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, has been instrumental in rallying support to keep film production alive, a point further reinforced by Ryan Coogler’s ‘Sinners’ earlier this year.

Nolan takes over from outgoing president Lesli Linka Glatter, who led the guild for four years, including through the challenging Hollywood strikes of 2023. He looks forward to collaborating with Glatter and the newly elected board to achieve the guild’s objectives. Other officers elected to serve alongside Nolan include Ron Howard, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Laura Belsey, and former president Paris Barclay.
