China Showcases Advanced AI and Autonomous Systems in Grand Military Parade

TLDR: China’s recent ‘Victory Day’ military parade in Beijing prominently featured a range of advanced AI-powered and autonomous military systems, including drone swarms, unmanned aircraft, and robotic quadrupeds. This display, observed by international leaders, underscored China’s strategic push for AI in warfare and prompted calls for accelerated AI development in the U.S. and its allies.

Beijing, China – September 6, 2025 – China marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II with a massive military parade in Beijing on September 3rd, an event that has since reverberated globally for its prominent display of artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous military systems. The spectacle, attended by Russian President Vladimir Putin and other international leaders, served as a powerful demonstration of China’s rapidly advancing capabilities in AI-driven warfare.

The parade showcased an array of next-generation AI-powered drones, including advanced stealth drones like the GJ-11, and a new, enormous tube-shaped unmanned aircraft, the AJX002, designed for autonomous operations. On the ground, robotic quadrupeds, colloquially dubbed ‘robotic wolves,’ marched alongside troops, highlighting China’s significant strides in unmanned combat vehicle technology. The presence of a contingent from the People’s Liberation Army’s (PLA) new cyberspace operations unit further emphasized the critical role of cyber and AI in modern military strategy.

Analysts quickly interpreted the display as a clear message from Beijing. Heather Williams of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) noted, ‘It sends a very strong message to the U.S. … that China is leading an alternative order.’ The synchronized display of dozens of high-tech systems was seen as both a psychological and physical assertion of power, with a retired U.S. general commenting on PBS NewsHour, ‘They had dozens of next-gen systems in synchronized display – that’s as much a psychological weapon as a physical one.’

The exhibition has intensified concerns among U.S. officials and experts, who, while acknowledging that much of the technology may not yet surpass American capabilities, were impressed by the scale and integration demonstrated. The consensus emerging from Washington this week is a pressing need for the U.S. and its allies to accelerate their own AI and autonomous military programs to maintain deterrence. In a related move, the Pentagon recently requested an additional $1.6 billion for AI and autonomy research and development.

This military showcase underscores a global AI arms race, with nations vying for technological superiority in defense. As Representative Don Bacon (R-NE), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, remarked, ‘AI will do for warfare what airplanes did 100 years ago – those who harness it first will have a stark advantage.’ China’s ‘Victory Day’ parade served as a dramatic visual reminder that AI is no longer an abstract concept in military strategy but a tangible and rapidly evolving component on the frontlines of global security.
