This strategic move aims to empower individual soldiers with the ability to rapidly identify and respond to threats, such as enemy drones and concealed troop positions, even when traditional communication channels are compromised by signal jamming.
The software developed by TurbineOne is designed to operate on soldiers’ existing devices, including laptops, smartphones, and drones, eliminating the critical need for a constant cloud connection. This on-device processing capability is crucial for maintaining operational effectiveness in contested environments where connectivity can be unreliable. The contract reflects the evolving realities of modern warfare, characterized by the rapid pace of combat driven by drones and AI, alongside the pervasive challenge of signal interference.
According to Ian Kalin, Chief Executive of TurbineOne, the company demonstrated remarkable agility during its embedded period with the Army, implementing over 200 software revisions in a single week based on direct user feedback. This rapid iteration process underscores the startup’s responsiveness to military requirements. The deal is particularly notable as it represents one of the fastest pathways—just under four years—for a software startup to secure a long-term contract with the Pentagon.
The adoption of TurbineOne’s AI solution aligns with a broader directive from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who has been advocating for the armed services to procure more commercial software and transition away from older, more expensive weapon systems in favor of advanced drone and AI technologies. In April, the Army was specifically tasked with transforming into a modern fighting force that leverages fewer personnel and more cost-effective, yet lethal, technological solutions.
The Army is implementing the TurbineOne software unit by unit, commencing with infantry and cavalry divisions. This phased rollout allows for continuous stress-testing and further soldier feedback integration. Beyond individual threat identification, TurbineOne’s software also possesses the capability to deploy and coordinate drone swarms, a feature that has already been utilized by other branches of the military.
