ChatGPT Unveils Multi-Component Plugin (MCP) Support, Revolutionizing AI Development and Enterprise Applications in 2025

This pivotal update, which became generally available to Team Enterprise, Edu admins, and Pro users in June 2025, allows for the creation of more modular and sophisticated plugins directly within the ChatGPT ecosystem. OpenAI had officially adopted the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in March 2025, signaling a strategic move to integrate this standard across its product suite, including the ChatGPT desktop application, OpenAI’s Agents SDK, and the Responses API.

The Model Context Protocol is being hailed as the ‘HTTP for AI agents,’ establishing a universal framework for secure, two-way communication between AI systems and external data sources. This standardization is critical for overcoming the limitations of isolated AI models, enabling them to access and interact with information trapped in various data silos and legacy systems.

For developers, MCP support means the ability to deploy complex workflows and specialized business logic, dramatically expanding the scope of practical applications for enterprises. Users can now perform detailed research by seamlessly connecting ChatGPT to a multitude of applications, such as linking PayPal accounts for financial summaries, or integrating with services like Gmail and Calendar. Looking ahead, an exciting new feature, ‘ChatGPT Record Mode,’ is slated for release for Team workspaces on macOS. This mode will empower users to record meetings and voice notes, generating detailed transcripts and structured summaries directly within ChatGPT, with recording lengths extending up to 120 minutes.

Microsoft announced the general availability of MCP integration in Copilot Studio in May 2025, introducing new features such as enhanced tool listing, improved tracing, and streaming transport support.
