TLDR: Referral traffic from ChatGPT to external websites has dropped by 52% since July 21, according to an analysis by Josh Blyskal of Profound. This significant decline is attributed to OpenAI’s strategic shift towards favoring ‘answer-first’ content from platforms like Reddit and Wikipedia in its citations, rather than a direct impact of the GPT-5 launch. Brands focusing on conversion-oriented content are seeing reduced visibility, highlighting a critical need for publishers to adapt their content strategies to provide direct, query-addressing answers.
New data reveals a substantial 52% decrease in referral traffic from ChatGPT to external websites since July 21. This finding comes from an extensive analysis conducted by Josh Blyskal of Profound, who examined over 1 billion ChatGPT citations and 1 million referral visits across various website verticals. The report, published on Search Engine Land, indicates a deliberate shift in OpenAI’s citation strategy.
Key figures from Blyskal’s analysis underscore this trend: Reddit citations have surged by 87% since July 23, now constituting over 10% of all ChatGPT citations. Similarly, Wikipedia’s citation share has jumped by 62% from its July low, now accounting for nearly 13%. Collectively, Wikipedia, Reddit, and TechRadar, the top three cited sites, have seen their combined citation share increase by 53% in just one month, now representing 22% of all citations.
This dramatic shift is not a direct consequence of the GPT-5 launch on August 7. Instead, Blyskal suggests that ChatGPT’s citation consolidation began weeks prior, indicating a manual reweighting of OpenAI’s retrieval system to prioritize ‘useful answers.’ This strategic pivot means that branded content primarily focused on conversions, such as ‘Schedule a demo,’ is increasingly being overlooked. Conversely, ‘answer-first’ platforms like Reddit and Wikipedia are gaining prominence because they directly address user queries.

Blyskal emphasizes the evolving landscape for content creators, stating, ‘The citation opportunity is massive for brands willing to shift from conversion first to answer first content.’ The implication for publishers and brands is clear: those that fail to provide direct, comprehensive answers within their content risk being marginalized in ChatGPT’s responses, leading to a loss of millions of potential referral clicks. This trend highlights a critical need for content strategies to evolve beyond traditional conversion funnels to prioritize direct informational value.
