TLDR: Catawba County Schools in North Carolina recently hosted an AI ‘Prompt-a-Thon’ to enhance students’ AI literacy. This event is part of a broader three-year initiative to integrate generative AI across the district’s 28 schools, aiming to prepare students for an AI-driven future.

Catawba County Schools (CCS) in North Carolina recently held an innovative AI ‘Prompt-a-Thon’ event, designed to immerse students in the practical application of generative artificial intelligence and cultivate essential AI literacy skills. The event, which took place this week, aimed to help students understand and utilize AI through interactive discussions and hands-on engagement.

This ‘Prompt-a-Thon’ is a key component of a comprehensive three-year initiative undertaken by Catawba County Schools in partnership with AI for Education. This ambitious program, launched following a competitive, state-funded grant from the North Carolina State Board of Education, seeks to implement generative AI across all 28 schools within the district.

The overarching goal of this initiative is multifaceted: to build community-wide AI literacy among students, teachers, leaders, and caregivers; to develop and test generative AI tools that can enhance instruction and learning; and ultimately, to equip students with the necessary skills for an increasingly AI-driven future.

The collaboration between CCS and AI for Education has been instrumental in developing this forward-thinking proposal, leveraging AI for Education’s expertise in responsible AI implementation and change management, combined with CCS’s vision and deep understanding of its educational community. This partnership underscores the critical need for collaboration in preparing the next generation for an AI-augmented world.

Earlier efforts in this initiative included a two-day AI Literacy “Train the Trainer” workshop held in August 2024, which served as the kickoff for a 3-year Digital Learning Initiative Impact grant from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. This workshop focused on GenAI fundamentals, equipping educators with strategies and resources to build AI literacy among students and foster ethical mindsets regarding AI use. [Search Result 5]
