TLDR: Instructure, the company behind the widely used Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), has announced a significant global partnership with OpenAI to embed advanced artificial intelligence capabilities directly into the platform. This integration aims to streamline instructional workloads for educators and provide personalized, dynamic learning experiences for students, marking a transformative step in educational technology.
SALT LAKE CITY and SAN FRANCISCO – July 23, 2025 – Instructure, the leading edtech ecosystem and creator of the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), and OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence research organization, have unveiled a groundbreaking global partnership. This collaboration will see OpenAI’s cutting-edge AI technology integrated directly into Canvas, promising to redefine the educational landscape for both instructors and learners.
The announcement, made at InstructureCon25 in Spokane, Washington, highlights a strategic move to infuse AI throughout the Canvas platform. A cornerstone of this integration is the introduction of ‘LLM-Enabled Assignment,’ a novel tool that empowers educators to craft custom GPT-like experiences within their courses. This allows for the creation of Large Language Model (LLM) workflows directly within the LMS, offering unprecedented flexibility in designing interactive and intelligent assignments.
Beyond custom assignments, Instructure is also launching ‘IgniteAI,’ a new suite of AI tools powered by AWS Bedrock. IgniteAI is designed to simplify and streamline the use of AI within Canvas, connecting with hundreds of other educational tools. This will enable educators to automate routine tasks such as creating quizzes, generating rubrics, summarizing discussion threads, and aligning content to learning outcomes, thereby freeing up valuable time for more meaningful instructional activities. Shiren Vijiasingam, Chief Product Officer at Instructure, emphasized that IgniteAI allows educators to maintain control over the learning experience while engaging other AI solutions.
For students, the integration promises a more personalized and adaptive learning journey. Learners will benefit from dynamic and tailored educational conversations within Canvas. Crucially, educators will gain insights into students’ interactions with AI on assignments, with the assurance that learner information remains private to the Canvas user and is not shared with OpenAI. This evidence-based learning approach ensures that key learning artifacts are captured and returned to the Gradebook, seamlessly bridging AI-driven exploration with standards-aligned assessment.
Steve Daly, CEO of Instructure, stated, ‘We’re committed to delivering next-generation LMS technologies designed with an open ecosystem that empowers educators and learners to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing world. This collaboration with OpenAI exemplifies this bold vision for AI in education.’ The company’s strategic approach to AI focuses on enhancing connections within its extensive educational ecosystem, which comprises over 1,100 edtech partners and leading LLM providers.
In addition to the core Canvas LMS enhancements, Instructure also announced the beta launch of ‘Canvas Career,’ an AI-powered learning management system specifically tailored for workforce development and skills-based training. This platform aims to address the growing demand for workforce-aligned, skills-first education, with general availability expected in January 2026. Canvas Career will feature AI-powered content creation tools and mobile-first delivery, among other functionalities.
