Canadian Journalism Foundation Establishes New Award for Excellence in AI Safety Reporting

TLDR: The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF), in collaboration with the AI Safety Foundation, has launched the CJF Hinton Award for Excellence in AI Safety Reporting. This new annual award, carrying a $10,000 prize, aims to recognize outstanding Canadian journalism that critically investigates the safety implications of artificial intelligence and promotes responsible AI development.

Toronto, October 14, 2025 – The Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF), in a significant move to address the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, announced today the creation of a new annual award: the CJF Hinton Award for Excellence in AI Safety Reporting. Launched in partnership with the AI Safety Foundation, this prestigious award seeks to honor Canadian journalists who produce exceptional work critically examining the safety implications of artificial intelligence.

The award is named after Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, often referred to as ‘the godfather of AI,’ in recognition of his pivotal work in artificial neural networks and his ongoing campaign to raise public and governmental awareness about the potential threats posed by AI. The CJF Hinton Award will specifically highlight journalism that not only identifies the challenges associated with AI but also delves into innovative solutions and strategies to mitigate its risks, thereby fostering a more informed public discourse on the responsible development and application of AI technologies.

Natalie Turvey, President and Executive Director of the CJF, emphasized the critical timing of this initiative. “’Catastrophic risk’ refers to rare, extreme events that pose significant threats to human health and safety on a global scale. While AI offers tremendous potential for positive change, responsible development and implementation requires careful attention to safety considerations,” stated Turvey. She added, “The goal of this award is to promote thoughtful, evidence-based reporting that raises awareness of catastrophic risks associated with AI, foster public understanding and encourage dialogue on creating a safer future for humanity.”

Turvey further highlighted the urgency, noting, “At a time when AI is advancing faster than our understanding of its risks, quality journalism has never been more critical. While a senior executive at Google, Geoffrey Hinton transformed AI from theory to reality, and now he’s leading the conversation about keeping it safe. This award recognizes journalists who help Canadians navigate the most consequential technology of our time – understanding not just what AI can do, but what we must do to ensure it serves humanity’s best interests.”

The recipient of the CJF Hinton Award will receive a $10,000 prize, which will be presented at the CJF’s annual Awards ceremony in Toronto. The award is open to Canadian journalists or teams whose work has been published on a national media platform. Submissions for the inaugural award will open in December 2025, with a deadline for entries set for January 16, 2026. Accepted media formats include long-form investigative reporting or series, digital media/multimedia storytelling, podcasts, audio reporting (such as radio features), and documentaries (audio or video).

Geoffrey Hinton himself underscored the importance of journalistic scrutiny in this field. “As AI advances rapidly, we urgently need rigorous reporting that examines its safety risks and explores how to address them,” Hinton commented. “This award highlights the vital role journalists play in advancing the public debate on AI’s future.” The establishment of this award marks a significant step in encouraging in-depth, responsible journalism on one of the most impactful technological advancements of our era.
