TLDR: The California State University (CSU) system is actively integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its curriculum, particularly within creative majors and for overall curriculum design. This initiative is backed by a $3 million fund from the Chancellor’s Office, supporting 63 faculty projects selected from over 400 proposals. The effort aims to equip students with AI literacy and critical thinking skills for an AI-driven future, with projects launching in June 2025 and running through June 2026.
The California State University (CSU) system is making significant strides in incorporating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its educational framework, with a strong focus on creative majors and innovative curriculum design. This system-wide push is spearheaded by the CSU Artificial Intelligence Educational Innovations Challenge, an initiative launched in April 2025 by the Chancellor’s Office. The challenge sought proposals from faculty across the 23 CSU universities on how to effectively integrate AI tools into instruction and professional development.
An impressive response saw over 750 faculty members submitting more than 400 proposals. From these, 63 winning projects have been selected to receive a total of $3 million in funding from the Chancellor’s Office. These projects are set to commence in June 2025 and will continue through June 2026, with findings shared system-wide to maximize impact.
Nathan Evans, CSU’s chief academic officer and deputy vice chancellor of academic and student affairs, stated that these initiatives will ‘explore and demonstrate effective AI integration in student learning.’ The goal is to prepare students for an AI-powered future by fostering AI fluency, critical thinking, and ethical AI use.
Examples of funded projects include Cal State Fullerton bringing together faculty and students in undergraduate STEM courses to design and test AI-integrated assignments, using randomized controlled trials to compare AI and non-AI instructional strategies. At CSU Channel Islands, communications students will analyze AI-generated messages and draft AI assignments to better understand the necessity of human judgment.

Beyond the challenge, CSU’s broader AI Initiative, introduced in February 2025, also includes workforce training for AI-powered careers and the CSU AI Commons, a system-wide hub for AI tools, resources, and best practices. The university system has also partnered with Adobe to equip students with AI literacy and creative skills, providing access to Adobe Creative Cloud apps with AI capabilities to all students, faculty, and staff at Adobe Creative Campuses like Fullerton, San Jose State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Stanislaus.
