University of Central Florida Establishes New Artificial Intelligence Institute to Drive Innovation and Talent Development

TLDR: The University of Central Florida (UCF) has officially launched its Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IAI), a major initiative aimed at advancing AI research and fostering talent across a wide range of disciplines. This new institute will bring together faculty from various colleges to collaborate on foundational and applied AI, positioning UCF as a leader in this rapidly evolving field.

The University of Central Florida (UCF) has announced the establishment of its new Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IAI), a significant step towards solidifying the university’s role as a national leader in AI research and talent development. Launched on July 30, 2025, the IAI is designed to unite top faculty, foster industry partnerships, and promote cross-campus collaboration to accelerate advancements in artificial intelligence.

UCF President Alexander N. Cartwright emphasized the strategic importance of this initiative, stating, “This initiative reflects our broader commitment to grow research, scale our areas of excellence and prepare students to lead in a technology-driven future.” He further added, “AI is massively transforming how we live, work and learn. As Florida’s Premier Engineering and Technology University, UCF is uniquely positioned to lead in this critical space.”

The IAI will initially bring together over two dozen world-class faculty members from four key colleges: the College of Business, College of Engineering and Computer Science, College of Medicine, and College of Sciences. These experts will focus on advancing both foundational and applied AI across diverse areas, including computer vision, robotics, machine learning, healthcare, finance, and mathematics. The institute is envisioned as a central hub for collaboration, driving education and discovery with tangible real-world impact.

Mubarak Shah, Trustee Chair of Computer Science and the inaugural director of the institute, highlighted the institute’s role in consolidating UCF’s AI strengths. “The Institute of Artificial Intelligence unites UCF’s AI strengths under one roof, creating a platform for high-impact research and talent development,” Shah stated. The IAI will also support UCF’s broader ‘AI for All Initiative,’ which aims to integrate AI into teaching and learning across all disciplines.

The institute’s objectives include uniting an initial 25 faculty members across the four aforementioned colleges, leveraging UCF’s extensive expertise for a multidisciplinary approach. It will also promote collaboration with industry, government, and community stakeholders, benefiting from UCF’s location in a dynamic metropolitan area. A key focus is to strengthen the AI skillset of all students, providing them with a competitive advantage in the workforce.

UCF’s existing prowess in AI is notable, with its computer vision research currently ranked No. 8 in the nation. Faculty members have secured substantial funding from prestigious agencies such as DARPA, IARPA, and the NSF. The IAI is poised to further enhance these capabilities, with plans to onboard nearly 30 new faculty members specializing in AI, expanding into emerging areas like natural language processing and speech recognition. The institute will also contribute to projects like enhancing agricultural applications through AI, supported by grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Leaders from the community have also expressed support for UCF’s new venture. AdventHealth, for instance, lauded UCF’s leadership in technology and talent advancement, stating, “The launch of the UCF AI Institute under Dr. Shah’s leadership signals a defining moment for Central Florida and the nation. AI will shape the next era of medicine, mobility, security and society. AdventHealth is proud to stand alongside UCF to unlock the full potential of this technology through trusted partnerships, shared innovation, and a commitment to preparing the next generation of AI leaders.”
