Indianapolis, IN – October 1, 2025 – Butler University is at the forefront of exploring the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on education, with several faculty members contributing to a new publication on the subject. This effort is a direct outcome of a Generative AI working group convened by the Provost’s Office in Spring 2024, tasked with developing comprehensive guidance for the ethical and effective use of AI in teaching and learning.
The working group, which met throughout the spring and summer semesters, has articulated a perspective that views generative AI as an integral part of contemporary work, academia, and culture. While acknowledging its significant potential to enhance productivity, learning, and creativity, the group emphasizes the critical importance of understanding the technology’s limitations and its ethical implications. A core tenet of their guidance is to raise awareness and advocate against potential injustices, inaccuracies, biases, and misuse of AI tools, particularly given their for-profit nature and developer origins.
Key faculty members involved in these initiatives include Dr. Ashlee Tietje, a Lecturer in Biological Sciences, and Kelly Van Busum, an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Software Engineering. Dr. Tietje, who earned her PhD from Clemson University, and Professor Van Busum, holding multiple degrees including a Ph.D., are among the experts shaping Butler’s approach to AI in the classroom. Their contributions underscore the interdisciplinary nature of this evolving field.
The university’s commitment extends to integrating generative AI into the curriculum where appropriate, fostering critical thinking about its applications, and addressing potential drawbacks. These concerns include environmental impact, intellectual property violations, copyright issues, job displacement, and the disruption of traditional teaching roles. The goal is to equip the Butler community with the knowledge to use AI ethically, effectively, and innovatively.

Further initiatives at Butler University include the ‘Faculty Framework for GAI,’ developed in summer 2024, which provides a roadmap for faculty. Additionally, Butler is participating in the ‘AI Ready: All Campus Essentials’ program, hosted by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). This program aims to enhance understanding and effective adoption of AI among faculty, staff, and administrators. Faculty from Butler have also contributed to an open repository of peer-reviewed generative AI class activities through the Private Academic Library Network of Indiana (PALNI), offering practical ideas for integrating AI across various disciplines. The university acknowledges that research and best practices in generative AI are continuously evolving, and this work represents an ongoing, iterative process.
