TU Delft Spearheads ‘Responsible AI in Health Care’ Conference, Bridging Principles to Practical Application

TLDR: TU Delft is playing a pivotal role in the upcoming ‘Responsible AI in Health Care’ conference in Rotterdam, scheduled for September 11-12, 2025. This significant event aims to move beyond theoretical discussions to practical implementation of AI in healthcare, addressing ethical, social, and technical challenges.

Rotterdam, Netherlands – September 30, 2025 – The Delft Design for Values Institute (DDEC) at TU Delft is actively contributing to a crucial discourse on the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, as highlighted by its involvement in an issue of the Federation of Belgian Health Centers. This initiative underscores a broader movement to transition AI in healthcare from foundational principles to tangible, practical implementation. The core of this effort is exemplified by the ‘Responsible AI in Health Care’ conference, co-organized by TU Delft, set to take place on September 11 and 12, 2025, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

This landmark conference, a collaborative effort involving prominent academic institutions and industry leaders, aims to bring together between 400 and 650 international representatives from academia, business, and industry. The focus is squarely on developing AI responsibly across various perspectives, including medical, ethical, social science, design, legal, and data science.

The event will delve into critical topics such as the collection and sharing of healthcare data for AI, the development of AI systems that align with real-world demands, and the effective implementation of AI systems, considering interactions between AI, clinicians, nursing staff, and patients. Furthermore, it will address the evaluation and accountability of socio-technical systems incorporating AI, alongside the governance and regulation necessary for AI in healthcare.

Keynote speakers and scientific directors, including Evert Stamhuis, Stefan Buijsman, and Michel van Genderen from the Convergence Centre for Responsible AI in Health Care, will open the conference. Notable speakers include Prof. Brent Mittelstadt from the University of Oxford, discussing ‘Fair and truthful AI in healthcare,’ and Jan-Willem Scheijgrond, President of COCIR and Global Head of Government and Public Affairs at Philips, who will address ‘Responsible AI in Healthcare, the role of industry.’

The conference also features ‘Emerging Innovations: Start-up Pitches,’ where pioneering start-ups like Leven Vision B.V. and Ameretat Health B.V. will present their innovations to a distinguished jury, competing for a €10,000 prize.

TU Delft’s involvement emphasizes the urgent need to navigate the profound impact of AI on society, particularly in healthcare, where high-stakes decisions are routine. While AI promises significant benefits in diagnosis, treatment, hospital management, and medical research, it also poses risks such as undermining patient-doctor relationships, threatening responsibility attribution, reproducing social biases, and potentially disorienting medical research. The conference seeks to define what it means to make AI practices and products responsible, identifying the values that must be embedded in technology design and how to ensure healthcare remains responsible post-AI integration.
