Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) has positioned itself at the forefront of artificial intelligence (AI) adoption in the education sector, marking a significant global milestone by becoming the first K-12 organization worldwide to be recognized as an ambassador for the Vatican’s ‘Rome Call for AI Ethics’. This initiative, developed in collaboration with technology giants like Microsoft and IBM, emphasizes the ethical development and deployment of AI, aligning perfectly with BCE’s mission and Catholic values of Excellence, Integrity, Justice, and Hope.
The ambitious rollout involves integrating Microsoft 365 Copilot across BCE’s network of over 140 schools, reaching approximately 12,500 educators and support staff. This phased implementation is set to commence in January 2025 and continue through 2026, promising a transformative impact on teaching and learning methodologies.
Early pilot programs have yielded impressive results. Teachers participating in trials, such as those at St Francis College Crestmead, reported an average saving of 9.3 hours per week on administrative tasks. These time efficiencies were achieved through the automation of routine duties like lesson planning, email management, and drafting report cards, allowing educators to dedicate more time to student engagement and deeper learning experiences. Dr. Sally Towns, BCE Executive Director, highlighted the importance of establishing ethical principles before embarking on such technological initiatives, ensuring solutions are guided by a clear framework.
Beyond administrative relief, AI is being leveraged to enhance student outcomes and well-being. Tools like Reading Coach and Math Coach are designed to adapt learning materials to individual student needs, fostering hyper-personalized learning experiences. This approach has not only improved student literacy and numeracy skills but also contributed to better emotional well-being, reducing stress and boosting confidence among students.
In a unique development, BCE has also launched a custom-built ‘Catholic CoPilot’ chatbot. This innovative AI tool is specifically ‘grounded in Catholic teaching and tradition and theology,’ drawing exclusively from BCE’s curriculum, Catholic theology, and approved Catholic websites. This ensures that the AI-generated content is filtered through a religious lens, providing tailored and contextually relevant responses for students and teachers.
