TLDR: The University of Cincinnati (UC) has launched ‘Bearcats AI Ready!’, a comprehensive initiative to integrate artificial intelligence across its academic, research, and operational functions. This program aims to prepare students, faculty, and staff for an AI-powered future through a new AI Hub, a four-tier AI Fluency Framework, the expansion of BearcatGPT, and the introduction of AI-driven Socratic Tutors in key courses. The university’s goal is to become a national leader in responsible AI deployment, enhancing student success and streamlining university processes.
The University of Cincinnati (UC) is making a significant stride towards becoming an ‘AI-ready’ campus with the introduction of its ‘Bearcats AI Ready!’ initiative. This extensive program is designed to embed artificial intelligence into every aspect of the university, from academics and research to daily operations, ensuring that students, faculty, and staff are well-prepared for a future increasingly shaped by AI.
Bharath Prabhakaran, UC Vice President & Chief Digital Officer, emphasized the university’s ambition, stating, ‘Our goal is to transform UC from ‘AI-fluent’ to truly ‘AI-ready.’ Our Bearcats AI Ready! initiatives support responsible, innovative AI adoption across the institution that will help accelerate UC’s efforts to enhance student success and streamline university processes.’
Key components of the ‘Bearcats AI Ready!’ initiative include:
New AI Hub: UC has established a centralized ‘AI at UC’ website. This hub serves as a comprehensive resource for AI governance, training modules, and supported tools such as BearcatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Adobe Firefly. It will also highlight ‘AI Champions’ within the campus community, including faculty leaders like Dr. Kelly Cohen, the Brian H. Rowe Endowed Chair in Aerospace Engineering.
AI Fluency Framework: A four-tier framework has been developed to build AI proficiency across the university. Tier 1, ‘AI Essentials,’ is a self-paced module covering fundamental AI concepts, responsible usage, and university-supported platforms. Subsequent tiers will offer advanced training, including applied workshops with Microsoft and other partners, in-depth studies on Responsible AI and ethical decision-making, and opportunities for technical certifications, labs, and sprint weeks.
BearcatGPT Expansion: Initially a Microsoft Azure OpenAI pilot, BearcatGPT is transitioning to an enterprise-wide platform. This secure environment for generative AI, which includes models like GPT-4.x, GPT-5, and DALL-E for text-to-image generation, will soon be accessible to all UC students, faculty, and staff via BearcatGPT.uc.edu. The expansion will feature governed API capabilities and allow for the creation of departmental and custom GPT agents, all operating within UC’s Azure environment and adhering to its data-governance standards.
AI-Driven Socratic Tutors: Scheduled for a mid-November launch, AI-powered Socratic Tutors will be introduced in 10 high-impact math and statistics courses. Co-led by Dr. Valentine Johns and Digital Technology Solutions (DTS), these tutors are designed to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills by posing structured questions rather than providing direct answers.
Beyond these initiatives, DTS is actively pursuing other AI projects to enhance operational efficiency, including credential certification with Enrollment Management, synthesizing student feedback for the College of Engineering & Applied Science, and automating accounts payable invoice processing within Administration & Finance. The university plans to continuously evaluate and integrate additional AI tools and platforms.
