TLDR: Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, predicts that AI agents will fundamentally transform the software industry by unlocking untapped data, expanding the total addressable market, and enabling organizations to undertake previously unfeasible tasks, leading to exponential growth in enterprise AI adoption. He emphasizes that AI will create new work rather than merely replacing existing jobs.
Aaron Levie, CEO of Box, a prominent content cloud company, is at the forefront of predicting a monumental shift in the software industry, driven by the advent of AI agents. According to Levie, these intelligent agents are poised to revolutionize how businesses interact with their content, unlock previously untapped data, and significantly expand the total addressable market (TAM) for software solutions.
In a recent announcement on May 15, 2025, Box unveiled a comprehensive new AI platform designed to integrate powerful AI agents for search, deep research, and data extraction directly into enterprise content. This platform enables businesses to derive deeper insights from their data without the cumbersome process of moving content across multiple platforms. A key aspect of this initiative is Box’s expanded partnership with Microsoft, integrating Box AI capabilities into Microsoft 365 Copilot, including Teams, Word, PowerPoint, and Copilot Chat. This collaboration aims to seamlessly blend Box’s intelligent content management with Microsoft’s AI-powered productivity ecosystem.
Levie characterizes 2025 as ‘day one of agent adoption in the enterprise,’ drawing a parallel to the early stages of AI chatbot integration in 2023 and 2024. Despite the nascent stage of adoption, he projects an exponential surge in the deployment of AI agents, forecasting ‘a hundred times more agents in the enterprise this year than last year, but in five years it’ll probably be something like 100,000 times the number of agents.’
A core tenet of Box’s AI strategy is to extract immense value from data that has historically been underutilized. Levie highlights how AI agents can enable organizations, from talent agencies to insurance companies, to gain unprecedented insights from their contracts and agreements, potentially leading to new revenue generation opportunities.
Countering widespread concerns about AI leading to job displacement, Levie posits that AI agents will, in fact, create more work. He argues that the vast majority of use cases for AI in enterprises are for tasks that humans were not performing previously due to resource limitations or cost. ‘90% of the work that AI is doing in a couple years from now is work that humans never did before AI,’ Levie stated. This perspective suggests that AI’s primary impact will be to expand organizational capabilities and accelerate project timelines, rather than replacing existing human roles. Levie even admitted, ‘I’ve probably caused far more work for humans as a result of AI probably by an order of magnitude than I’ve actually saved in human time because of AI.’

Box’s AI platform is designed to be interoperable, allowing enterprises to leverage breakthroughs from various AI models, including OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic, Meta, and XAI, by bringing these models directly to their content. This strategic evolution marks a significant bet by Box on the transformative power of AI in reshaping enterprise content management, reflecting Levie’s long-standing vision for the company since its co-founding in 2005.
