New Delhi, India – September 19, 2025 – Paytm, officially known as One 97 Communications Limited, is poised for significant growth, according to a comprehensive report released by BofA Global Research. The financial institution has maintained its ‘Neutral’ rating on the Indian merchant payments leader but has notably raised its price objective for the stock from Rs 1,160 to Rs 1,290. This optimistic revision is primarily attributed to Paytm’s strategic focus on artificial intelligence, robust Soundbox ecosystem, and stringent cost discipline.
The report underscores Paytm’s strong performance across its core business segments, including payments, Soundbox, and merchant lending. A pivotal aspect of BofA’s positive assessment is Paytm’s ongoing transformation into an ‘AI-first company.’ The company is actively deploying advanced technologies such as generative AI and agent-based AI to streamline its operational processes and significantly boost efficiency. BofA analysts believe that these AI initiatives hold substantial potential for delivering meaningful upside as they are scaled across the company’s extensive operations.
In terms of financial performance, BofA has revised upward its EBITDA and EPS estimates for Paytm. This improvement is largely a result of the company’s successful cost-cutting measures, particularly in marketing and employee expenses. The report also highlighted a notable gesture by Founder and CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma, who opted to forgo his ESOPs, further contributing to the bolstered earnings. Analysts at BofA anticipate further opportunities for cost rationalization over the next three to five months.
A key competitive advantage for Paytm, as identified by BofA, is its dominant Soundbox ecosystem. The report describes this as a ‘distinct competitive advantage in the merchant space.’ As a first-mover in this segment, Paytm has successfully cultivated merchant trust and gained invaluable access to rich transaction data. This, in turn, is expected to strengthen the company’s lending capabilities and lay a solid foundation for sustainable growth within its financial services offerings. The report explicitly states, ‘We find Paytm competitively well positioned to benefit in merchant space given first mover advantage in Soundbox space & hence access to merchant data allow them to have better lending capability.’

This clearance of regulatory overhangs is expected to allow investors to shift their focus towards the company’s fundamental strengths and its long-term growth trajectory.
