TLDR: Bangladesh is actively exploring the transformative potential of Generative AI (GenAI) to drive business growth, enhance operational efficiency, and improve customer experiences across diverse sectors. The nation is also developing a National AI Policy to address the challenges of adoption and implementation, aiming to leverage this technology for significant economic impact.
Bangladesh is on the cusp of a significant technological leap, with Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) emerging as a pivotal force for unlocking unprecedented business growth and operational efficiency. Experts believe that GenAI, a subset of AI capable of producing content, insights, and solutions with human-like intuition, holds immense potential to revolutionize various sectors within the country. This comes as Bangladesh works towards establishing a comprehensive National AI Policy to navigate the complexities and challenges associated with the widespread adoption and implementation of this advanced technology.
GenAI’s capabilities extend to rapidly analyzing vast datasets, identifying patterns, and generating relevant outputs, including personalized recommendations, sales forecasts, and automated customer service interactions. This is no longer a futuristic concept but a present reality shaping global business operations. For Bangladesh, the technology offers solutions to pressing business challenges, such as meeting increasing customer expectations for personalized services and optimizing large-scale operations.
The impact of AI, particularly GenAI, on the global economy is projected to be substantial. Studies suggest that generative AI could contribute an astounding $2.6 trillion to $4.4 trillion annually to global corporate profits. While its most significant influence is anticipated in banking, high-tech, and life sciences sectors, other industries are also expected to reap considerable benefits. For instance, the banking sector alone could see an added value of $200 billion to $340 billion per year, and retail and consumer packaged goods companies could experience an annual increase in operating profits ranging from $400 billion to $660 billion through GenAI utilization.
In Bangladesh, the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector is already experiencing the disruptive yet transformative power of AI. Companies like SkyTech Solutions have seen AI automate core tasks, leading to significant job displacement in certain areas but also driving efficiency. Musnad E Ahmed, founder of SkyTech Solutions, noted that AI automation wiped out over 80 percent of jobs in one project, leaving only quality control for human oversight. However, this shift is also prompting BPO firms to embrace AI solutions for survival and growth. Md Riajul Islam, CEO of Bright River Bangladesh, stated that their company now processes higher volumes with fewer people, with around 30 percent of their work being AI-assisted, speeding up delivery and creating new opportunities. Similarly, ASL BPO has reduced team sizes by 20-30 percent in projects due to AI-driven quality assurance, with CEO Zayed Uddin Ahmed emphasizing, ‘AI increases efficiency, especially with generative tools. Our digital marketing team now uses ChatGPT for research, saving hours.’
Beyond BPO, AI is poised to impact several key sectors in Bangladesh. In manufacturing, AI integration can enhance efficiency, quality, and consistency through predictive maintenance, smart quality control, and optimized supply chains. The Ready-Made Garment (RMG) manufacturing sector, which accounts for approximately 80% of export revenue, is already undergoing transformation with AI. The healthcare sector can leverage AI for improved diagnostic accuracy and efficiency, while AI-driven solutions can enhance the efficiency and safety of transportation infrastructure. Furthermore, AI is seen as crucial for skill development, improving teacher capacity, establishing AI labs, and forming legal frameworks in the education sector.

Bangladesh’s commitment to AI adoption is evident through initiatives like the development of the Ekush LLM and investments in AI startups. However, challenges such as limited infrastructure, low private investment, and a relatively low AI readiness index persist. Despite these hurdles, the nation is strategically positioning itself to harness GenAI’s potential, aiming to foster economic growth and digital transformation as it aspires to transition into a developed economy by 2041.
