KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 – Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo stated today that the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by businesses and workers in Malaysia is expected to significantly accelerate the nation’s economic growth across various sectors. Specifically, Generative AI alone is projected to unlock up to RM479 billion (USD113.4 billion) in productive capacity for the country.
Speaking at the High-Level Meeting on Global AI Governance during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2025 in Shanghai, China, yesterday, Minister Gobind underscored the collective responsibility of nations worldwide to ensure that AI remains a “force for good.” He stressed the critical role of collaboration in this AI-shaped era, stating, “Only through shared commitment, innovation and vigilance can we ensure that the digital world remains a force for good.” The overarching goal, he added, is to bridge the digital divide among nations and enhance digital collaboration to ensure that the development and governance of emerging technologies benefit humanity.

Minister Gobind welcomed the outcome document of the Global AI Governance Action Plan and highlighted Malaysia’s domestic initiatives. These include the establishment of the National AI Office (NAIO) last December, which is tasked with coordinating and driving the country’s AI agenda. As the 2025 ASEAN Chair, Malaysia is also spearheading the ASEAN AI Safety Network. This network, according to Gobind, will serve as ASEAN’s regional platform for AI safety, facilitating the exchange of best practices, research collaboration, standards development, and the responsible adoption of AI. He concluded by noting that AI is not merely transforming industries but is accelerating global development by driving innovation, enhancing decision-making, and optimizing resource utilization.
