AWS Enhances AI Interoperability with New Agent-to-Agent Protocol in Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime

TLDR: Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime has introduced robust support for the Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol, a significant advancement enabling AI agents built with diverse frameworks—such as Strands, OpenAI, LangGraph, Google ADK, or Claude Agents SDK—to communicate, discover peers, share capabilities, and coordinate actions seamlessly across various hosting environments, including AWS and edge devices. This enhancement is poised to dramatically improve interoperability and simplify the creation of scalable, sophisticated multi-agent systems by standardizing communication and reducing the need for complex custom integrations.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced a pivotal update to its Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime, introducing comprehensive support for the Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol. This new capability, unveiled on November 11, 2025, marks a significant step towards fostering a more collaborative and interoperable ecosystem for artificial intelligence agents. The A2A protocol allows AI agents, regardless of their underlying development framework or deployment location, to communicate and coordinate actions efficiently.

Historically, building production-grade AI agents has presented developers with substantial challenges, including infrastructure complexity, the need for extensive custom integrations, and steep learning curves that often delay deployment. The A2A protocol, building upon the foundation of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) introduced by Anthropic in November 2024, aims to alleviate these pain points by providing a standardized communication method. This standardization eliminates the complexity typically associated with multi-agent coordination, allowing agents to share context, capabilities, and reasoning in a common, verifiable format.

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime serves as a secure, serverless environment designed for deploying and operating AI agents and their associated tools at scale. With the integration of the A2A protocol, it now facilitates seamless communication between agents developed using a variety of frameworks, including Strands Agents, OpenAI Agents SDK, LangGraph, Google ADK, and Claude Agents SDK. This framework-agnostic approach ensures that agents can discover peers, share capabilities, and coordinate actions across different platforms, whether hosted on AWS infrastructure or edge devices.

Key features and benefits of this new support include:

Enhanced Interoperability: Agents from diverse backgrounds can now collaborate effortlessly, breaking down silos between different AI systems.

Simplified Development: Developers can focus on agent logic rather than intricate integration code, accelerating the deployment of intelligent agents.

Scalable Multi-Agent Systems: The protocol enables the creation of more sophisticated and scalable multi-agent solutions, capable of handling complex tasks.

Secure Communication: Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Runtime provides secure outbound authorization through IAM execution roles and AgentCore Identity, which offers managed OAuth 2.0 support for third-party identity providers like Google, GitHub, and Slack. It also supports VPC connectivity for enhanced security.

Flexible Workloads: The runtime supports both real-time, low-latency interactive experiences and long-running asynchronous workloads, up to eight hours, with complete session isolation.

AWS Vice President for Agentic AI, Swami Sivasubramanian, has previously emphasized the transformative potential of AI agents, stating that these autonomous software systems will dramatically accelerate innovation and improve productivity across every industry. The introduction of A2A protocol support directly aligns with this vision, addressing the critical challenge of enabling agents to act autonomously across digital boundaries while maintaining security and operational integrity.

Practical applications of the A2A protocol include building robust multi-agent systems for complex scenarios such as incident response, where various specialized agents can collaborate to detect, analyze, and mitigate issues. The complete A2A request lifecycle, from agent card discovery to task delegation, is streamlined, demonstrating how standardized protocols can eliminate the inherent complexity of multi-agent coordination. This move by AWS solidifies its commitment to providing a solid foundation for the next wave of agentic AI, making it easier for organizations to compose sophisticated agentic solutions.
