TLDR: Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently hosted a high-level AI/ML meetup in San Francisco, focusing on the engineering of next-generation AI systems and the pivotal role of autonomous agents. The event, held on August 19, 2025, brought together prominent figures from Databricks, Guardrails AI, DoorDash, Windsurf, and AWS for in-depth discussions, speaker sessions, and a dynamic fireside chat on the future of artificial intelligence.

San Francisco, CA – Amazon Web Services (AWS) successfully hosted its ‘SF AI/ML Meetup – Agents of Intelligence: Engineering the Next Generation of AI Systems’ on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. The advanced-level event, held at the AWS Builder Loft located at 525 Market Street, San Francisco, gathered machine learning engineers, technical practitioners, and AI enthusiasts to delve into the transformative impact of autonomous agents and cutting-edge machine learning architectures on the future of AI development.

The meetup’s agenda was structured to maximize engagement and knowledge sharing, commencing with event check-in from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM PT. This was followed by a robust series of speaker sessions from 6:00 PM to 7:40 PM, a dynamic fireside chat from 7:40 PM to 8:15 PM, and concluded with a dedicated networking session over food and drinks from 8:15 PM to 9:00 PM.

The event featured an impressive lineup of speakers, including:

Matei Zaharia, CTO & Cofounder at Databricks and an Associate Professor of Computer Science at UC Berkeley. Zaharia, renowned for initiating the Apache Spark project and contributing to MLflow, Delta Lake, ColBERT, and Dolly, shared insights into combining large language models (LLMs) with external data sources to enhance efficiency and result quality.

Shreya Rajpal, Cofounder & CEO of Guardrails AI, an open-source platform dedicated to ensuring the safety, reliability, and robustness of LLMs in real-world applications. With a decade of experience in ML and AI, Rajpal’s background includes being a founding engineer at Predibase (acquired by Rubrik) and working on computer vision models for autonomous driving at Drive AI.

Zhenzhen Liu, Principal ML Engineer at DoorDash, brought her extensive experience in recommendation systems and applied generative AI from previous roles at Yahoo, Google, Waymo, Snap, and Airbnb. She currently leads personalization and search initiatives at DoorDash.

Sudeep Das, Head of New Verticals ML at DoorDash, a distinguished AI/ML leader driving innovation in personalization, search, logistics, and product knowledge graphs. Das, who holds a PhD in Astrophysics from Princeton, previously led advanced ML initiatives at Netflix, OpenTable, and Beats Music.

Randy DeFauw, Sr. Principal Solutions Architect at AWS, contributed his over 20 years of technology experience, including work on autonomous vehicles, Big Data, and Machine Learning applications. He is also the co-author of ‘SageMaker Best Practices’ and ‘Generative AI Cloud Solutions’.

The fireside chat, a highlight of the evening, was moderated by Sudeep Das and included:

Jeff Wang, CEO of Windsurf, who assumed his role in July 2025. Windsurf is recognized for developing the first agentic IDE. Wang’s entrepreneurial journey includes co-founding RocketFuel Education and RNR Capital.

Shreya Rajpal and Randy DeFauw, who also participated as keynote speakers.

Ian Baldwin, Applied AI Research Scientist at DoorDash, with a background in computer vision and machine learning, including work on self-driving cars and space robots. Baldwin co-founded Booth.ai, focusing on generative AI image creation pipelines.

The event underscored AWS’s commitment to fostering the AI developer community, actively seeking sponsors to support future meetups through venue provision, food, or cash contributions. Such sponsorships offer significant exposure to an extensive network of over 40,000 AI developers in the San Francisco Bay Area and more than 450,000 worldwide.
