The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) recently unveiled the findings of a comprehensive survey exploring the ethical perspectives of aviation professionals on the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the sector. Presented during its “AI Days” event in Cologne, the survey highlights a prevailing sense of cautious optimism within the industry. The conference itself attracted nearly 200 on-site attendees globally, complemented by a significant online participation.
The survey evaluated acceptance, trust, and comfort levels across eight distinct hypothetical AI use cases in aviation. The results yielded an average acceptance score of 4.4 out of a possible 7. Despite this moderate level of acceptance, a notable two-thirds of the respondents expressed reservations by declining at least one of the presented scenarios.
Professionals voiced several critical concerns regarding AI deployment. These included apprehensions about the inherent limitations of AI performance, issues surrounding privacy and data protection, questions of accountability in AI-driven systems, potential safety risks, and the possibility of workforce de-skilling. A resounding majority of participants advocated for more robust regulation and stringent oversight from both EASA and national authorities to address these challenges.
During a keynote address at the event, Christine Berg from the European Commission underscored the current practical applications of AI in aviation, citing its role in optimizing air traffic flow and enhancing predictive maintenance. Berg emphasized the crucial need for AI systems to be “explainable, reliable, and certifiable” in alignment with the forthcoming EU AI Act.
