Australian Marketing and Advertising Sector Experiences Job Market Slowdown Amidst Surging AI Skill Demand

TLDR: The Australian advertising and marketing jobs market has seen a cooling trend in the first half of 2025, with an 8.3% drop in marketing job opportunities between March and May compared to the previous year. While traditional roles like marketing manager and communications officer faced declines, there’s a significant surge in demand for AI skills, particularly generative AI, and senior-level digital positions. Hybrid work remains a key expectation for job seekers, and overall job mobility is lower as professionals prioritize stability.

The Australian advertising and marketing sector is navigating a period of significant transformation, marked by a notable slowdown in job market activity during the first half of 2025. Data from Indeed reveals a concerning 8.3% decline in marketing job opportunities between March and May this year, when compared to the corresponding period in 2024. This downturn has particularly impacted commonly recruited positions such as marketing manager, communications officer, and campaign manager.

Despite the overall cooling, specific areas within the industry are experiencing robust growth. There’s an increased demand for senior digital marketers, activation managers, and senior brand managers, indicating a shift towards more specialized and digitally-focused roles. Kate Furey, Corporate Communications Director at Indeed, noted that ‘A number of senior and niche positions have defied the broader trend,’ highlighting a bifurcation in the market where higher-level and digitally-oriented roles are bucking the general slowdown.

Crucially, the demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills, especially in generative AI, is surging. AI is increasingly viewed as a productivity tool and an efficiency enabler for existing workforces, rather than a direct replacement for human roles. This is leading to the emergence of new, specialized positions such as Marchitect, CXO, Chief Customer AI Officer (CCAO), Martech Stack Architect, CDP Engineer/analyst/architect, and Predictive Engagement Analyst. Recruiters emphasize that emerging skills now encompass AI integration and sophisticated analytics, underscoring the evolving skill set required in the industry. While some in the field, like one recruiter, acknowledge that ‘AI hasn’t played a huge role in what I do, maybe it should,’ they also affirm that ‘creativity still needs a human at the helm.’ Andy Rouse, founder of Hire Aspirations, added, ‘If you have somebody who knows how to harness [data and AI] to drive short-term revenue, CEOs and CFOs love you right now.’

LinkedIn data provides further insights into the Australian marketing talent landscape, showing an active base of approximately 185,000 marketing professionals, with around 2,000 marketing roles currently advertised. Sydney and Melbourne remain the primary hubs, housing 60,000 and 50,000 professionals respectively. Interestingly, Melbourne’s media employment saw a 1% increase in Q2 2025, while Sydney experienced a 2% decline, reflecting uneven regional impacts of market shifts. Key in-demand skills include social media marketing, digital marketing, and marketing communications, with e-commerce optimization and social media management showing rapid growth.

Other notable trends include a potential easing of the ‘juniorisation’ trend, with senior-level recruitment in the media and marketing sector rising by 17% in the June 2025 quarter, while demand for junior positions fell by 6%, according to Mercury Talent. Hybrid working arrangements remain a non-negotiable for most job seekers, with about 30% of marketing job advertisements offering hybrid or work-from-home options, significantly higher than the national average of 12%. Job mobility is currently below pre-pandemic levels, as professionals prioritize stability amidst a cautious macroeconomic outlook. Simon Hadfield, Founder of Prime Mover Recruitment, maintains a steady sentiment, stating, ‘If you’re confident and good at what you do, you’ll make the right choice at the right time.’ The industry is also seeing a growing focus on customer experience (CX) roles, driven by an emphasis on personalization and commercially-fueled growth across all levels.
