Aston University and Harper James Collaborate to Revolutionize Legal Services with Generative AI

TLDR: Aston University has partnered with Birmingham-based law firm Harper James in a three-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to develop a generative AI-powered platform. This initiative aims to automate legal processes such as project scoping, contract proposals, and client onboarding, enabling lawyers to focus on higher-value tasks and enhancing service delivery efficiency and transparency.

Aston University and Birmingham-based law firm Harper James have embarked on a significant three-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to pioneer the transformation of legal services through the application of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). This collaborative project, supported by funding from Innovate UK, is set to develop an advanced AI-powered platform designed to streamline and enhance various aspects of legal practice.

The core objective of this partnership is to revolutionize the delivery of legal services by automating traditionally time-consuming processes. The new intelligent platform will focus on areas such as project scoping, the generation of proposals and contracts, and client onboarding. By automating these repetitive tasks, the project aims to free up legal professionals, allowing them to dedicate more time to complex problem-solving and delivering exceptional value to clients.

The technological foundation of this initiative involves leveraging cutting-edge research in generative AI. The project will develop novel AI models capable of analyzing and learning from extensive legal services data. A key feature of the platform will be its ability to track and learn from past cases, providing predictive insights for future projects, including forecasting potential outcomes and identifying necessary legal procedures.

Harper James, a firm known for its specialization in supporting Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) and its distinctive subscription-based model, views this collaboration as a crucial step in differentiating itself within the competitive UK legal sector. The firm is actively transitioning from a conventional billable-hour pricing structure to a more client-centric, value-based model. The efficiencies generated by the AI-enabled platform are expected to facilitate this transition, fostering adaptability and growth in a rapidly evolving industry landscape.

Toby Harper, Founder and CEO of Harper James, emphasized the strategic importance of this project, stating, “The innovation developed through this project with Aston University is a fundamental pillar that will set us apart from the rest of the legal services sector. It will allow our lawyers to focus on delivering exceptional value to clients, who will receive advice and support faster, more efficiently, and with even greater pricing transparency.”

Professor Abdul Sadka, director of The Sir Peter Rigby Digital Futures Institute at Aston University, highlighted the broader societal impact of such academic-industry collaborations. “KTPs like this form a very important part of our contribution to society as academics. By working in partnership, we can extend our specialist knowledge and expertise while being a solution provider to ambitious businesses like Harper James, enabling them to overcome digital challenges faced along their growth and innovation journeys,” Professor Sadka commented.
