UK Government’s AI Contract Spending Reaches £573 Million, Exceeding Previous Year’s Total

TLDR: The UK government has invested £573 million in Artificial Intelligence-related projects up to July 15, 2025, significantly surpassing the £468 million spent in the entirety of 2024. This acceleration in public sector AI investment, tracked by Tussell, aims to streamline bureaucracy and improve public services, with a major contract awarded to LGC Group for research.

The United Kingdom government’s investment in Artificial Intelligence (AI) projects has reached a substantial £573 million ($770 million) as of July 15, 2025. This figure marks a significant increase, already surpassing the total of £468 million ($628 million) invested in AI projects throughout the entire year of 2024, indicating a sharp acceleration in public sector commitment to AI adoption within the UK.

These figures, compiled by the government procurement data provider Tussell, highlight a growing emphasis on integrating AI across various government departments. The definition of AI contracts is broad, encompassing a wide range of technologies including generative AI, predictive and data analytics, image recognition, and automation.

The Starmer government has positioned AI as a crucial tool for modernizing public services, aiming to streamline bureaucracy and eliminate inefficiencies. Ministers have stated that the deployment of new technology is expected to save the civil service at least £45 billion ($60 billion) annually. A spokesperson from the Cabinet Office reinforced this perspective, stating, “Sluggish, outdated systems have held back public services for too long — costing time, money and public trust. From improving services and cutting waste, AI is helping us build a smarter state.”

The increased AI spending has also led to major contracts for various corporations. The single largest award this year was a £234 million ($314 million) contract granted to the LGC Group, a scientific services company formerly known as the Laboratory of the Government Chemist. This significant deal is allocated for research into AI applications.
