AI to Transform Crowd Management at Mahakumbh 2025, Setting Global Benchmark
Prayagraj, India – As preparations intensify for the monumental Mahakumbh 2025, the Uttar Pradesh government is spearheading a transformative approach to crowd management, integrating cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to ensure the safety, security, and seamless experience of millions of pilgrims. This ambitious undertaking is poised to establish a new global standard for managing mass gatherings through technological innovation.
The Mahakumbh 2025, anticipated to draw an unprecedented number of devotees, will span an expansive 4000 hectares, a significant increase from the 3200 hectares covered in 2019. On key bathing days, such as Mauni Amavasya, authorities expect over 6 crore (60 million) devotees to converge, necessitating a robust and intelligent crowd control system.
Advanced AI Integration for Enhanced Safety and Efficiency
At the heart of this initiative is the deployment of a comprehensive AI-driven framework. Over 2700 CCTV cameras are being installed across the district and the entire fair area, with 328 of these being AI-enabled. These AI-powered cameras are designed to monitor crowd density in real-time, automatically sending alerts to authorities when potential clustering or overcrowding is detected. This proactive approach allows for immediate intervention and dispersal of crowds before any untoward incidents occur. SSP Mahakumbh Mela, Rajesh Dwivedi, highlighted that these cameras will “automatically send us alerts based on their feed,” augmenting human intelligence.
Beyond surveillance, AI tools will be instrumental in optimizing railway passenger flow and streamlining crowd dispersal. Predictive modeling, informed by past Kumbh Mela data, will be utilized by IT experts working with Mela police to accurately count people and forecast crowd movements, particularly at high-density areas like Kali Sadak, Parade, Akhara Marg, Sangam Noze, and Ganga Prasar Kshetra. Additional DG (Prayagraj Zone) Bhanu Bhaskar stated that the Mela police have “developed a crowd management plan to control the flow of devotees at the ghats,” focusing on ensuring efficient movement and preventing excessive time spent at bathing spots.
Comprehensive Digital Ecosystem
The digitization of Mahakumbh 2025 extends beyond crowd monitoring. Multilingual chatbots will be available to assist pilgrims, and a digital ‘khoya paaya kendra’ (lost-and-found centre) will go live on December 1, leveraging advanced technology to quickly reunite separated individuals. This system, supported by the AI-enabled cameras, aims to alleviate a common concern for visitors.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has emphasized the need for the police department and other stakeholders to “leverage the advantage of technology for effective crowd management to avert any untoward incident.” He underscored the event’s significance as an “interface between India’s rich religious and cultural heritage and the world,” stressing the importance of safety, convenience, and cleanliness.
In addition to technological advancements, the logistical preparations are immense. Over 1.5 lakh (150,000) toilets will be constructed, and more than 10,000 sanitation workers will be engaged to maintain hygiene. Approximately 35,000 police and paramilitary personnel will be deployed on the main bathing days, with directives to be warm, soft-spoken, and dignified while dealing with pilgrims.
