Argyll and SambaNova Unveil UK’s Inaugural Renewable-Powered Sovereign AI Cloud in Scotland

TLDR: Argyll Data Development has partnered with AI infrastructure leader SambaNova to launch the UK’s first renewable-powered AI inference cloud. Located at the Killellan AI Growth Zone on Scotland’s Cowal Peninsula, this initiative aims to combine AI sovereignty, energy independence, and sustainability by utilizing on-site wind, wave, and solar energy to power SambaNova’s energy-efficient SN40L systems. The project seeks to provide secure, compliant, and cost-effective AI capabilities for UK enterprises.

DUNOON, Scotland – In a landmark move for the United Kingdom’s technological landscape, Argyll Data Development (‘Argyll’) has announced a strategic partnership with SambaNova, a leading next-generation AI infrastructure provider, to establish the UK’s first renewable-powered AI inference cloud. This pioneering deployment is set to anchor the Killellan AI Growth Zone, a sprawling 184-acre green digital campus situated on Scotland’s picturesque Cowal Peninsula.

The initiative, unveiled on October 23, 2025, is designed to create a blueprint for nations aiming to integrate AI sovereignty, energy independence, and robust sustainability practices. The Killellan AI Growth Zone will harness Scotland’s abundant renewable resources, drawing power from on-site wind, wave, and solar energy generation. This commitment to green energy will enable Argyll to deliver net-zero digital capacity, fostering skilled regional employment and significantly advancing the UK’s national AI and energy strategies.

At the heart of this renewable-powered cloud will be SambaNova’s advanced air-cooled SN40L systems. These systems are specifically engineered for maximum efficiency and minimal power consumption, with each rack drawing approximately one-tenth the power of conventional GPU systems. This innovative design eliminates the need for liquid cooling while maintaining enterprise-grade performance, further enhancing the project’s environmental credentials.

Peter Griffiths, Executive Chairman at Argyll, emphasized the dual objectives of the partnership, stating, “Together with SambaNova and our strategic partners, we’re building a sovereign AI infrastructure powered by renewable energy, demonstrating that sustainability and scale can go hand in hand. Our goal isn’t just to make AI greener, but to make it competitive, compliant and cost-effective.” He further added, “This project gives UK enterprises the ability to innovate responsibly, securely and within our own borders, in full alignment with national AI ambitions.”
